Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located at the ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) in Frascati, Italy, within the Director General's Services. The role is primarily focused on the management of the ESA Archives, which includes both analogue and digital records. The intern will be involved in the digitization process of the archives, supporting the appraisal and cataloguing of documents, and contributing to the development of strategies for long-term preservation of records. The internship aims to enhance the accessibility of ESA's historical documents and promote awareness of the agency's rich archival resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
  • Participating in the appraisal of archival series to support the implementation of disposition decisions.
  • Assisting in the cataloguing of selected series by enriching metadata in accordance with ISAD(G) norms and Dublin Core standards.
  • Supporting the curation of images preserved in the software tool named SHIP.
  • Engaging in the physical reception, appraisal, and preservation of documents.
  • Creating finding aids and drafting series-level descriptions based on international norms.
  • Developing strategies for the long-term preservation of both hard-copy and digital records.
  • Managing access to information contained in the archives in collaboration with other departments.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. They must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good knowledge of English or French is required, and knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to tasks.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally pursuing a Master's degree. The focus should be on fields related to archival studies, library science, information management, or a related discipline that supports the functions of the internship.

Experience:
While prior experience in archival work or information management is not mandatory, any relevant experience or coursework that demonstrates familiarity with archival practices, cataloguing, or digital preservation will be advantageous. The internship is designed for students, so a foundational understanding of the field is sufficient.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is either English or French, with a good command of one being essential. Additionally, knowledge of another language from an ESA Member State is considered beneficial and may enhance the candidate's application.
