Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands, within the Directorate of Science. The intern will work under the direct authority of the Head of the Science Engagement and Oversight Office, who is responsible for overseeing the scientific content of the Euclid mission. The primary focus of this internship is on science communication related to the Euclid mission, which aims to investigate the nature of dark energy and dark matter through the study of the geometry of the dark universe. The intern will support the Euclid Project Scientist and coordinate with the ESA Science Communication team to effectively communicate the mission's objectives and findings to both the general public and the astrophysical community. This role will involve managing social media communications, particularly during the Euclid Q1 data release planned for March 2025, and highlighting significant scientific achievements throughout the internship period.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
- Assisting in the development and dissemination of communication materials related to the Euclid mission.
- Coordinating with the ESA Science Communication team to ensure consistent messaging across platforms.
- Managing and updating social media accounts to engage with the public and scientific community effectively.
- Preparing reports and presentations on the Euclid mission's progress and findings.
- Participating in meetings and discussions with the scientific team to gather insights and updates for communication purposes.
- Supporting the organization of events and outreach activities to promote the Euclid mission.
- Monitoring and analyzing the impact of communication efforts and adjusting strategies as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. A strong interest in science communication, particularly in the fields of physics or astronomy, is essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience in managing professional social media accounts and a background in science communication is preferred. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with diverse audiences is crucial.
Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be enrolled in a university program, preferably pursuing a Master's degree in a relevant field such as science communication, physics, astronomy, or a related discipline. It is mandatory for the candidate to remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship to comply with ESA's internship requirements.
Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in science communication, ideally with a focus on physics or astronomy. Experience in managing social media accounts for professional purposes is highly desirable, as it will be a key component of the intern's responsibilities. Familiarity with the scientific community and an understanding of the Euclid mission's objectives will be beneficial.
Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is required for the position. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in ESA member states would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate with a broader audience.
