Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands, within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. The intern will work under the direct authority of the Director of Earth Observation Programmes and will be involved in the development of a 3D visualization tool for satellite telemetry. This tool aims to enhance the monitoring of satellite conditions during the Launch & Early Operations Phase (LEOP) and throughout the satellite's operational lifetime. The intern will be responsible for identifying project needs, defining user requirements, and developing the visualization tool using existing open-source software, potentially incorporating Virtual Reality elements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
- Identifying key project needs through surveys among different projects.
- Defining user requirements and deriving technical implementation requirements.
- Surveying existing tools and conducting trade-offs for final selection.
- Developing the visualization tool with reference data and interfaces.
- Validating the tool with real-time telemetry and conducting relevant analyses.
- Preparing installation kits and user manuals.
- Identifying tasks for generalization to other spacecrafts.
- Collaborating with team members and stakeholders to ensure the tool meets mission requirements and operational constraints.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master’s level course. They must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good knowledge of English or French is required, and knowledge of another Member State language is considered an asset. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, creativity in problem-solving, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally pursuing a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as computer science, engineering, or a related discipline. The internship is designed for students who are nearing the completion of their studies, ensuring that they have the necessary theoretical background and skills to contribute effectively to the project.
Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of software development, particularly in visualization tools or similar applications. Experience with CAD software, telemetry systems, or programming languages relevant to the development of visualization tools will be advantageous. Interns should be prepared to engage in hands-on development and testing of the tool.
Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English or French, with a good command of one of these languages required for effective communication. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in ESA member states is considered beneficial and may enhance the candidate's application.
