Job Posting Organization:
The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to encompass 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency operates across multiple countries in Europe and collaborates with various international partners. ESA's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.

Job Overview:
The internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The Systems Department plays a crucial role in supporting ESA programs through various engineering disciplines, including end-to-end performance system engineering and space segment systems engineering. The selected intern will engage in concurrent design activities, technology developments, and the evolution of integrated digital environments. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience in systems engineering, particularly in the context of innovative technologies such as digital engineering, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), and augmented reality. The intern will also explore the future of space design environments, contributing to the development of methodologies that align with ESA's strategic goals for 2025 and beyond.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be expected to actively participate in systems and concurrent engineering activities, including studies conducted at the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF). Responsibilities will include supporting technology developments in areas such as digital engineering, MBSE, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. The intern will also investigate how advancements in digitalization and visualization can enhance integrated environments that connect data, processes, and people. Additionally, the intern will contribute to the development of design models and methodologies that address sustainability and the Zero Debris roadmap, ensuring alignment with ESA's Agenda 2025.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. They must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good command of English or French is mandatory, with knowledge of another language from an ESA member state being an asset. Background knowledge in engineering, particularly systems engineering and mission analysis, is highly desirable. Familiarity with model-based systems engineering and practical experience with AR/VR technologies will be advantageous.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally pursuing a Master's degree in a relevant field such as engineering, systems engineering, or a related discipline. The candidate should be in their final or penultimate year of study, ensuring they have the necessary theoretical foundation to engage in the internship effectively.

Experience:
While specific professional experience is not mandatory, candidates with practical experience in systems engineering, mission analysis, or related fields will be preferred. Experience with AR/VR technologies, programming languages such as C# or Python, and engineering tools like Matlab Simulink or CATIA will enhance a candidate's application. Familiarity with web application development and modeling tools is also beneficial.

Languages:
The working languages at ESA are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is required, while knowledge of another language from an ESA member state is considered an asset. Proficiency in multiple languages will be advantageous in a collaborative international environment.

Additional Notes:
This internship is a full-time position and is open to nationals from specific ESA member states, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and others. The agency is committed to diversity and encourages applications from women and individuals with disabilities. ESA provides necessary support for individuals with disabilities in the workplace and during the recruitment process. The closing date for applications is 30 November 2024, at 23:59 CET/CEST.
