Job Overview:
The Statistics Analyst role is designed to support Pacific Island Countries and Territories by analyzing statistical data, generating insights, writing reports, and providing statistical technical support and training. The position is crucial for enhancing the capacity of national statistics systems to meet both national and international statistical needs. The Statistics for Development Division (SDD) aims to ensure that these countries have competent and sustainable national statistics systems. The Statistics Analyst will be responsible for producing regular statistical collections, developing indicators, and ensuring that reports adhere to quality standards. Additionally, the role involves contributing to ad-hoc analyses and providing technical assistance and training to national statistics offices and relevant stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Statistics Analyst will have a variety of responsibilities, including:
- Conducting analysis, developing indicators, and writing reports for regular statistical collections.
- Producing statistics and indicators using appropriate statistical methods that align with international best practices.
- Ensuring that reports meet the quality standards set by SDD and are well-regarded by member National Statistics Offices and stakeholders.
- Making R or Stata code used in reports accessible in GitHub repositories to ensure reproducibility of results.
- Producing ad-hoc analytical reports, fact sheets, and other knowledge products relevant to the Pacific region.
- Contributing to SPC's reputation as a regional leader in generating insights in relevant subject areas.
- Providing timely responses to requests for assistance with Pacific statistics.
- Training and advising staff in national statistics offices and relevant ministries.
- Supporting improvements and innovations in data production and analysis methods. 1
- Maintaining partnerships and collaborations with other agencies and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in statistics, economics, data science, or a related academic discipline. Additionally, they should have at least 7 years of relevant experience in official statistics, economics, social development, or related fields. Proficiency in analyzing household complex survey data and/or administrative data for generating official statistics is essential. Familiarity with statistical software such as R or Stata, as well as version control systems like Git and GitHub, is also required.
Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as statistics, economics, or data science is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for the analytical and technical aspects of the role.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in fields such as official statistics, economics, or social development. This experience should include a strong focus on analyzing complex survey data and administrative data, which are critical for generating official statistics.
Languages:
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory for this role. Knowledge of French is considered an asset, given SPC's working languages.
Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is budgeted until 31 December 2027, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability. The Statistics Analyst position is classified as a band 9 role within SPC’s 2024 salary scale. For positions based in Noumea, the starting salary range is SDR 3,209-3,915 per month, while for Suva-based positions, the range is SDR 2,284-2,856 per month.
