Job Posting Organization:
The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency operates across various countries in Europe and collaborates with numerous international partners. ESA's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. The agency is involved in a wide range of activities, including Earth observation, human spaceflight, and satellite navigation, and aims to foster innovation and scientific discovery in the field of space exploration.

Job Overview:
This internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The intern will work closely with the Earth and Mission Science Division, which is responsible for bridging the gap between science and technology by translating innovative ideas into practical applications in Earth system science. The intern will contribute to the preparation and development of future Earth Observation missions and validate data from existing satellites. The focus of this internship is on Augmented Reality (AR) Sandbox Programming for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry, where the intern will help develop an engaging exhibit for the ESA Open Day, enhancing public understanding of SAR satellite missions through interactive simulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
  • Developing and implementing software for the Augmented Reality Topography Sandbox that integrates Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data.
  • Collaborating with the Earth Observation Campaign team to ensure the accurate representation of SAR interferometry principles in the AR sandbox.
  • Enhancing the user experience by creating intuitive and engaging AR visualizations for the sandbox.
  • Preparing and testing the sandbox for live demonstrations during the ESA Open Day.
  • Contributing to outreach activities of ESA missions and gaining hands-on experience with AR technology in a scientific context.
  • Engaging with a diverse and international team of scientists across various Earth Science disciplines.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong programming skills and knowledge of Linux, as well as proficiency in programming languages suitable for AR development. A basic understanding of SAR interferometry and its applications in Earth observation is also required. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate creativity and problem-solving abilities to effectively translate complex SAR data into accessible visualizations. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential for effective collaboration with the Earth Observation Campaign team.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master’s level course. It is essential that candidates remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship, ensuring that they can balance their academic commitments with the responsibilities of the internship.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong foundation in programming and a keen interest in space science. Experience in AR development or related fields would be advantageous, as would any practical experience in scientific research or technology development.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these languages is required for the position. Additionally, knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset, enhancing communication within the diverse team at ESA.

Additional Notes:
This internship is a full-time position and is open to nationals of specific European countries and cooperating states. ESA is committed to diversity and inclusion in its workforce and encourages applications from all qualified candidates, including women and individuals with disabilities.
