Job Overview:
The internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The Radio Navigation Systems and Techniques Section is responsible for providing functional support to ESA projects and conducting research and development in radio navigation systems. The intern will engage in technology research and development related to positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) applications, focusing on the integration of 5G/6G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and low Earth orbit (LEO) signals of opportunity. The role requires hands-on involvement in the development and integration of testbeds, simulation tools, and processing campaigns, contributing to the advancement of navigation systems and techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be tasked with supporting the development and integration of 5G and Signals of Opportunity testbeds within the ESTEC Navigation Laboratory. Responsibilities include consolidating internal simulation and analysis tools, characterizing 5G NTN signals and LEO signals for positioning, and executing monitoring and processing campaigns for these signals. The intern will also be expected to collaborate with team members to enhance the capabilities of the Radio Navigation Systems and Techniques Section, contributing to the overall mission of advancing radio navigation technologies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. They must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good knowledge of English or French is required, and knowledge of another Member State language is considered an asset. Additionally, a background in telecommunication engineering or satellite positioning is advantageous.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally pursuing a Master's degree in a relevant field such as engineering, telecommunications, or a related discipline. The internship is designed for students who are nearing the completion of their studies, ensuring that they can apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting while gaining valuable experience in the space industry.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates with knowledge or background in telecommunication engineering or satellite positioning will be preferred. The internship is aimed at students who are looking to gain practical experience in the field of radio navigation systems and techniques, and who are eager to learn and contribute to ongoing projects at ESA.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory for the position. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in ESA member states is considered a valuable asset, enhancing communication and collaboration within the diverse workforce.
