Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is situated within the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The Human Exploration Science Office aims to enhance human exploration into deep space by understanding the biological and physiological responses to space travel. This internship focuses on linking findings from space omics studies to human health risks associated with space exploration. Interns will engage in data analysis, bioinformatics, and systems biology to synthesize existing research and identify knowledge gaps, ultimately contributing to the advancement of human health in space and on Earth.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for analyzing space omics data to assess health risks for astronauts during space travel. Key duties include synthesizing findings from published omics studies, mapping these findings to potential health risks, and utilizing a comprehensive database of space omics results. Interns will also identify knowledge gaps in current research and provide insights for future studies. The role requires collaboration with team members and may involve presenting findings to the Human Exploration Science Office.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master’s level course. A strong background in biomedicine, biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, or related fields is encouraged. Knowledge and experience in working with omics data is considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally at the Master’s level. Candidates must remain enrolled for the entire duration of the internship, ensuring that they can apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting.
Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, familiarity with omics data analysis and a background in relevant scientific fields will be beneficial. Interns should possess a keen interest in space science and human health, as well as the ability to engage with complex datasets.
Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is required, while knowledge of additional languages from ESA member states is considered an asset.
