Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is situated within the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The Commercialisation and Innovation Team is responsible for leading industry-driven innovation initiatives that promote the utilization of space exploration infrastructure and services. This role focuses on the development of lunar communication and navigation services as part of the Moonlight Programme, which aims to establish a lunar communication and navigation infrastructure through various missions. Interns will support the definition, implementation, and promotion of commercial opportunities in space exploration, particularly in the context of the emerging Lunar Economy. The internship will involve working closely with third-party entities to help them develop business cases and identify funding opportunities available at ESA.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As an intern in the Commercialisation & Innovation team, you will be tasked with supporting the definition and implementation of commercial opportunities in lunar communication and navigation. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Assisting in the development of use cases for the Lunar Pathfinder and Lunar Communication and Navigation Services (LCNS).
  • Supporting third-party entities in maturing their business cases related to lunar services.
  • Understanding and elaborating the Concepts of Operations for users, including mission phases, orbits, latencies, and data types.
  • Conducting system to mission analysis and operations related to lunar missions.
  • Proofreading and assisting in the creation of technical documentation.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders, including ESA, NASA, JAXA, and other partner agencies, to ensure effective communication and project success.
  • Engaging in activities that promote the growth of the lunar economy and the utilization of lunar resources.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master’s level course. A strong interest in space exploration, telecommunications, and system engineering is essential. Additionally, candidates should possess good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team. Knowledge of satellite system design, mission analysis, and competencies in communications and navigation will be considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally at the Master’s level. Students must remain enrolled for the entire duration of the internship, which is crucial for maintaining eligibility for the position.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in space exploration and related fields. Any relevant coursework or projects related to telecommunications, system engineering, or space missions will be beneficial.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is required, while knowledge of another Member State language would be advantageous.
