Job Overview: The UN Volunteer Communication Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the Ingazi initiative, which aims to empower young people in Rwanda by providing them with access to education, training, and employment opportunities. The officer will work under the supervision of the Chief Education at UNICEF and collaborate closely with the Ingazi Comms taskforce led by the Ministry of Youth and Arts. The primary functions of this position include drafting key documents, managing communication materials, updating stakeholders on progress, and monitoring social media engagement. The officer will also be responsible for collecting feedback from users of the Ingazi platform and drafting content for various communication channels to ensure that stakeholders are informed about the initiative's progress and impact.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communication Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Drafting key documents such as concept notes, progress reports, and briefing notes for local and global reports.
Managing vendors and supporting the development of communication materials for the Ingazi initiative.
Drafting regular updates for partners and stakeholders regarding project milestones.
Scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and documenting minutes.
Monitoring and updating social media pages, responding to queries, and summarizing key highlights for monthly reports.
Collecting and consolidating user feedback on the Ingazi platform to inform enhancements.
Drafting content for the Ingazi website, including newsletters and press releases.
Supporting event coordination and logistics for various activities related to the Ingazi project.
Compiling performance metrics and drafting monthly status reports to update stakeholders on progress. 1
Engaging in activities that promote volunteerism and community engagement as part of the UN Volunteers programme.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Communication Officer position should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and have a good understanding of social media management. They should be able to draft clear and concise documents and reports. Additionally, candidates should have experience in project management and be able to work collaboratively with various stakeholders. Proficiency in using digital tools for communication and reporting is essential. A proactive attitude and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines are also important qualifications for this role.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, social sciences, or a related field is required for this position. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in communication strategies or project management will be preferred. Knowledge of the Rwandan context and familiarity with youth empowerment initiatives will be considered an asset.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least 2-3 years of professional experience in communication, public relations, or a related field. Experience working with youth programs or in a non-profit organization will be highly valued. Familiarity with the UN system and understanding of the principles of volunteerism will also be beneficial for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of Kinyarwanda and French will be considered an advantage. The ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages will enhance the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time role as a UN Volunteer, and the contract duration is typically for a year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs. The role is based in Kigali, Rwanda, and may involve occasional travel within the country for project-related activities. Compensation for UN Volunteers is provided in the form of a monthly stipend, and volunteers are encouraged to participate in community engagement activities as part of their assignment.
