Job Overview:
The System Engineer position is situated within the ExPeRT Team of the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes (D/HRE) at ESA. This role involves integrated support from the Systems Engineering Division, focusing on early phase mission concept studies for small missions to the Moon. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing technical aspects of these studies, ensuring they align with ESA's goals of exploring destinations in space for scientific research and economic development. The position requires collaboration with various teams and stakeholders to facilitate the successful execution of mission studies, including oversight of engineering documentation and coordination with industrial contractors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the System Engineer include acting as a study manager or technical officer for early phase studies related to small lunar missions. This involves preparing and organizing internal study work, overseeing Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) studies, and managing industrial pre-Phase A or Phase A/B1 studies. The engineer will also be responsible for defining and maintaining spacecraft requirements, supporting mission architecture trades, and liaising with study scientists and payload engineers. Additionally, the role includes supervising junior engineers, managing contractor deliverables, and participating in technical meetings and reviews to ensure the successful progression of studies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a master's degree in a relevant engineering domain. A strong background in systems engineering, particularly in the context of space exploration, is essential. Familiarity with exploration missions, technology development, and project development phases is highly desirable. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Educational Background:
A master's degree in engineering or a related field is required for this position. This educational background should encompass relevant technical domains that align with the responsibilities of a System Engineer in space exploration.

Experience:
Applicants should have a minimum of five years of professional experience, which includes work in industry and involvement in early phase studies, specifically from concurrent engineering up to Phase A/B
  • This experience should demonstrate a solid understanding of the complexities involved in space mission planning and execution.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is one of the working languages of ESA. Proficiency in French is also required, and knowledge of another language from an ESA member state would be considered an asset, enhancing communication within the diverse workforce of the agency.

Additional Notes:
This position is a fixed-term contract for a duration of four years and is non-renewable. The role is classified within the grade band A2 - A4, with the possibility of being filled at A1 level if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant experience. The recruitment process will prioritize candidates from ESA member states, and applicants must be eligible to access technology subject to European and US export control regulations.
