Job Overview:
The Senior Charitable Estate Planning Advisor plays a crucial role in the Mission Advancement department of the American Heart Association. This senior-level fundraising position is responsible for engaging with professional estate planning and wealth advisors, as well as current and potential individual donors, to support charitable gift planning. The advisor must possess a deep understanding of the AHA's mission, gift options, and current initiatives to effectively inspire and engage donors and advisors. The role involves building strategic relationships, cultivating current and prospective donors, and serving as a subject matter expert on charitable estate giving opportunities. The advisor will work both virtually and in-person, traveling as necessary to meet with donors and present information about planned giving opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Charitable Estate Planning Advisor has a wide range of responsibilities, including:
  • Developing and implementing a strategic action plan to identify and build relationships with professional advisors within a defined geographic territory (WY, CO, NM, OK, TX, AR).
  • Engaging in donor cultivation and stewardship through personal visits, calls, written correspondence, and presentations.
  • Following up on leads from individuals requesting charitable estate planning information.
  • Supplying charitable estate planning illustrations and reviewing estate plans with prospective donors.
  • Consulting with professional advisors on technical solicitations and creating formal proposals.
  • Leveraging marketing and communication resources to generate quality interactions with professionals and their clients.
  • Documenting plans, progress, and results in the Association’s Salesforce CRM system.
  • Traveling approximately 50% of the time to develop programs in major metropolitan areas within the designated territory.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Senior Charitable Estate Planning Advisor position should possess the following qualifications:
  • Superb interpersonal skills with the ability to build productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of effectively conveying the Association's priorities to professional advisors and donors.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven experience in engaging with professional estate planning and wealth advisors.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership and management capabilities in a comprehensive development environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products, particularly Word and PowerPoint, and familiarity with virtual communication platforms such as MS Teams and Zoom.
  • A successful track record of completing gift agreements through personal interviews and effective solicitation calls.

Educational Background:
Candidates should ideally hold an advanced degree (master’s or higher) or relevant certifications such as JD, CFP, CAP, or CFA. This educational background is preferred to ensure a comprehensive understanding of charitable estate planning and the financial aspects involved in the role.

Experience:
The position requires at least 5 years of experience in Charitable Estate Planning, with a preference for candidates who have 10 years of experience in the field. This level of experience is essential to navigate the complexities of estate planning and to effectively engage with professional advisors and donors.
