Job Overview:
The Small Business Counselor plays a crucial role in the implementation and ongoing development of the IRC Small Business Development Program. This position involves providing one-on-one business advising on various topics, including start-up assistance, personal and business financial literacy, business operations, sales, and marketing. The Small Business Counselor will also assist individuals in accessing small business loans and capital by helping them identify financing options, prepare necessary documents, and navigate the funding process. Additionally, the role requires developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in the local ecosystem, such as SBA Centers, Resource Partners, and small business lenders, to enhance the program's effectiveness and reach.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Small Business Counselor's duties include, but are not limited to: assisting in outreach and recruitment of program participants; screening and assessing individuals for program eligibility; providing one-on-one business counseling and management assistance; leading training programs on various business topics; entering data into IRC and other mandated systems; ensuring accurate record-keeping for program eligibility and reporting; preparing loan applications and business plans; underwriting and packaging loan applications; facilitating referrals to outside service providers; conducting individual case management and loan collections; planning and coordinating training activities and special events; developing outreach materials; training and leading support staff, volunteers, and interns; attending regular meetings with IRC staff and volunteers; and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field. Business experience may substitute for formal education. A minimum of 1 year of experience in small business development counseling and training is required, with a preference for 2 years of experience. Prior experience working with immigrant and refugee entrepreneurs is strongly desired. Candidates should have excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Familiarity with assessing business training needs and analyzing business-related materials is required, along with experience in developing business loan packages and working in the non-profit sector. Strong organizational, record-keeping, and analytical skills are essential, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills. The ability to conduct effective instructional sessions is also necessary, and proficiency in a second language is a plus.

Educational Background:
The position requires an undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field. Candidates with relevant business experience may be considered in lieu of formal education, highlighting the importance of practical knowledge and skills in the field.

Experience:
The Small Business Counselor should have a minimum of 1 year of experience in small business development counseling and training, with a strong preference for candidates who have at least 2 years of experience. Experience working with immigrant and refugee entrepreneurs is highly desirable, as it aligns with the IRC's mission to support diverse communities.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in a second language is considered a valuable asset that can enhance the candidate's ability to serve a diverse clientele effectively.

The working environment for this position includes a combination of standard office settings, remote work, and field time within the service delivery area. The role may require occasional weekend and/or evening work. Compensation for this position is based on various factors, including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget considerations.
