Health Strategies Intern

Due to the current pandemic, daily travel is minimal and voluntary to ensure the health and safety of staff. There is no overnight travel currently. In the future, this position may resume daily and/or overnight travel. All AHA offices are closed and staff are currently working from home. Offices will be reopening in September 2021; this position may resume to being based in the local office. Responsibilities This is an ideal internship opportunity for a graduate level Public Health student with an interest in student and school wellness. The American Heart Association (AHA) just released a new guidance toolkit for evidence-based, equitable school tobacco policies that were created with Alliance for a Healthier Generation, the Public Health Law Center, and many more stakeholders. The focus for this internship would be to assess district level school tobacco policies across San Diego County to help us understand which districts already meet this guidance and which ones we should work to engage with and explore updating their policies. Objectives include:

• Learn the AHA’s toolkit recommendation and policy objectives
• Assess district level school tobacco policies across San Diego County
• Create decision grids based on the policy assessments
• Support planning and execution of district level convenings on school tobacco policies and implementation strategies
• Support creation of school action plans
• Support policies changes and implementation strategies
• Support/create grant evaluation and reporting methods
• Report project findings and opportunities to present (if desired)

Qualifications

• Experience and/or understanding of school district level policies and an interest in overall student and school wellness
• Highly effective communication skills with the ability and willingness to perform functions in a primarily virtual setting
• Initiative with the ability to work independently to achieve assigned objectives
• Ability to build relationships with many different stakeholders.

Compensation & Benefits This is a grant-supported, paid internship opportunity at $15/hour with a variable schedule of up to 10 hours/week. Additional hours may be available or required to complete a full evaluation.
