Job Description
Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a compassionate professional to serve as the US Safeguarding Advisor. Working with the US Operations team, this position will lead the respective operational approach to fulfilling HFHI’s safeguarding commitments for the U.S. and Canada region, as well as contribute to enhancing the Habitat network’s global technical capacity with respect to Safeguarding. This position will directly collaborate with U.S. Habitat for Humanity affiliated entities and Habitat for Humanity Canada national office leadership.
The US Safeguarding Advisor will provide leadership for Safeguarding awareness-raising, planning and implementation of best practices and topic-specific initiatives across the region. This includes (1) ensuring HFHI staff in the regional support division are trained on Habitat’s Safeguarding policies, standards, and related procedures, embracing, demonstrating and supporting these standards in all engagement with Habitat’s federated network, (2) providing learning opportunities and support across Habitat’s federated regional network, including support for compliance with network safeguarding policies and (3) supporting the implementation of Habitat’s Safeguarding standards by HFHI local operating entities within the region. This will also include promoting safe programming, implementing steps to help ensure safe partnerships, delivering and arranging for in-person, virtual and on-demand learning opportunities/events, establishing and monitoring metrics, conducting and providing training on risk assessments, and generally fostering the mainstreaming of safeguarding practices throughout Habitat’s federated regional network, especially when engaging directly with communities and through partners. Additionally, this role will focus on global capability enhancement through working closely with the global safeguarding team to develop systems/procedures and enhance standards. POSITION RESPONSIBLITIES: Safeguarding Champion ** Champion safeguarding policies and accompanying policy guidance support materials, including strong advocacy for safeguarding within HFHI and throughout Habitat’s federated regional network to promote a culture of safeguarding. ** In partnership with the Global Head of Safeguarding and the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Senior Director/HR Business Partner, provide quality and accessible advice, support and guidance to managers and staff in the support division, ensuring that adequate safeguarding measures are integrated into office operations, processes and programs as outlined by Habitat’s Safeguarding Standards and other core documents. ** Act as a reporting avenue for Safeguarding related issues, concerns or experiences and further report all potential Safeguarding related issues, as per Habitat’s Safeguarding Policy. ** Represents HFHI regionally in Safeguarding matters within the global Habitat Safeguarding team. Drive safeguarding strategy for Regional Operations ** Establish safeguarding implementation plan/annual plan for the region. Monitor progress against plan and supports teams through barriers or opportunities. ** Collaborate with and provide advice to key teams and/or departments within the regional support program teams to develop and implement, then support and monitor Safeguarding risk analysis across all programs. U.S. Affiliate resources and support ** Working collaboratively with internal and affiliated network stakeholders, act as project manager to roll-out and provide continued support of the US Affiliate safeguarding policy throughout the US affiliated network. ** Create or support opportunities for on-line and in-person peer learning by local U.S. affiliate safeguarding Advisors. ** Lead ongoing U.S. affiliate support and learning opportunities. This will be accomplished by consulting 1:1 with US affiliate staff, creating and organizing passive resources, and facilitating/presenting during learning events. ** Occasionally, as assigned, act as project manager for topic-specific initiatives. ** Collaborate with and provide advice to U.S. affiliates in topic-specific discussions. Support safeguarding risk analysis, which includes risk identification and development of appropriate mitigating actions within the affiliate’s management strategies, processes, procedures, or activities. ** Create training and resources to empower U.S. affiliate staff members to increase safeguarding knowledge and awareness with members of local partners. Work collaboratively with various internal and U.S. affiliated network stakeholders to create and maintain training materials for the U.S. affiliated network and make those materials available to Habitat for Humanity Canada national office leadership. Safeguarding standards are applied throughout the region ** With support from leadership, manage overall compliance by the regional support division, including controlled entities, to Habitat’s Safeguarding Standards. Project and Proposal Development ** Operate as technical partner on safeguarding matters regarding design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design, proposal formulation, donor compliance, etc. Case Support ** With respect to safeguarding investigations within the region, provide advice on case assessment and recommendations, and support fact-gathering under as needed based on consultation with all participating teams, including investigatory, legal and communications teams. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: ** Bachelor degree level of education in relevant field ** 5-10 years previous experience of development/humanitarian work, or related work ** 5+ years of safeguarding experience or experience in a similar field (e.g. child protection and/or sexual and gender based violence protection) ** 3+ years of safeguarding investigation experience, desired. **Experience dealing with sensitive matters - highly confidential and discrete – and ability to build/maintain trust **Experienced trainer, facilitator, and mediator **Experienced in change management and project management skills **Must have a high level of resilience with the ability to be impartial and remain calm under difficult circumstances **Must be able to impartial in the most challenging situations **Must have excellent problem – solving, and decision-making skills **Excellent report writing and presentation skills **Experience adhering to safeguarding compliance requirements from donors preferred ** Active support of HFHI Values:
