Responsibilities
The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Public Programs Manager, Tobacco Endgame in our National Center office. Location of the selected candidate is flexible provided location allows for effective and cost-efficient travel.
In this role, you will be responsible for implementing AHA Mission initiatives within AHA’s Tobacco Endgame Strategy and expansion of AHA’s youth engagement and school tobacco policy efforts. Additional responsibilities include working directly with youth, AHA staff and external organizations to expand tobacco-focused youth advocacy efforts, implementing program activities through hands-on field consultation, coaching and technical support to field staff who work with school districts, as well as providing direct support to school districts in communities without field staff. The Public Programs Manager develops project management plans including budgeting and expense monitoring, establishing milestones and objectives, supporting clear communication across multiple departments, preparing grant-related progress reports, and other duties necessary to achieve program deliverables.
*Due to the current pandemic, travel is minimal and voluntary to ensure the health and safety of staff. There is no overnight travel currently. In the future, this position may resume daily/overnight travel. All staff are currently working from home.*
Essential Job Duties:
- Provide direction and implementation support for AHA’s tobacco youth engagement strategy, including gaining youth input, enhancing web and other digital strategies, and coordinating with other youth volunteer efforts across the AHA.
- Provide technical assistance and coaching to AHA field staff and school administrators to promote adoption and implementation of AHA’s tobacco free school framework.
- Collaborate with AHA staff, volunteers, and external partners to develop and execute strategies, ensuring they are effectively implemented. Develop and update resources (toolkits, infographics, slide decks, etc.) necessary to achieve program objectives.
- Develop and ensure progress toward project plans, timelines, and budgets for tobacco-focused grant initiatives. Serve as a liaison to funders and ensure compliance with grant requirements and restrictions (lobbying vs. non-lobbying).
- Develop regular reports to promote effective program implementation and tracking progress. Submit invoices and requests for payments in a timely manner.
- Provide staff support for AHA’s Integrated Tobacco Endgame and Advocacy Matrix Team meetings.
- Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, Public Health, Public Policy, Political Science, Communication, Education, related field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years of:
- Successful experience or demonstrated understanding in advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, media/communications, and advocacy tactic development and implementation.
- Experience working in public health policy.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience:
- In project management including budgeting, scheduling, managing to deadlines and reporting out to key stakeholders.
- Working on development or implementation of advocacy and/or educational programming for youth.
- Demonstrated knowledge of local, state and federal government activities and structures. Ability to assess the local and state governments related to advocacy issues.
- Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team.
- Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.
- Must be able to travel overnight approx. 20% of the time.
- Three (3) years of experience in youth engagement.
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills.
- Knowledge of public and private school systems, public health, voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations.
