Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and employs over 2,500 staff members, along with thousands of scientists and engineers from around the world. CERN operates in 23 member states and collaborates with numerous other countries, making it a hub for international scientific collaboration. The organization is dedicated to probing the fundamental structure of the universe through advanced research in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments.
Job Overview: The position of Applied Physicist/Engineer at CERN involves working within the ATLAS Team, specifically in the Tracker section (EP-ATL-TRK). The primary focus of this role is the construction and integration of the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk), which is crucial for the future of high-energy physics experiments. The successful candidate will be responsible for the reception testing of ITk Silicon Pixel Detector elements and multi-module Pixel structures, ensuring their functionality before integration into the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel. This role requires close collaboration with the Detector Technologies Group (EP-DT) and involves hands-on participation in the integration work within a cleanroom environment. The position also entails documenting procedures and results for integration testing and developing testing protocols for the ITk Detector post-installation.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Applied Physicist/Engineer include:
Conducting reception testing of ITk Silicon Pixel Detector elements and multi-module Pixel structures.
Performing testing and verification of integrated ITk Pixel Detector structures and services, including combined testing with the ITk Strip Detector at CERN's surface integration facility (SR1).
Deploying and improving software and hardware elements for integration testing and service validation, focusing on online detector control and safety.
Documenting procedures and results for ITk integration testing and service validation, as well as developing testing procedures for the ITk Detector after installation.
Actively participating in the ITk Detector integration work in the surface cleanroom and preparing equipment for various testing stages.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related field. Additionally, proven experience in the construction and integration of silicon pixel detectors for high-energy physics experiments is essential. Candidates should also have experience in testing and data analysis of silicon detector systems, as well as in silicon detector operation and quality control, including the development, installation, and commissioning of laboratory infrastructure. Experience in developing DAQ/online software or detector control systems for silicon detector testing and operation is also required. The ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and international collaboration is crucial.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to engage in high-energy physics experiments and the construction of complex detector systems.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in the field, specifically in the construction and integration of silicon pixel detectors for high-energy physics experiments. This includes hands-on experience in testing and data analysis of silicon detector systems, as well as operational experience with silicon detectors and quality control processes. Experience in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment is also essential, as the role involves working closely with physicists, engineers, and technicians.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires full-time onsite work, with a standard working week of 40 hours. Candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas and underground installations, and may be required to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The job grade for this position is 6-7, and it offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, along with comprehensive health insurance, paid leave, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
