Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe. The organization operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
Job Overview: The position of Applied Physicist/Engineer within the CERN ATLAS Team is crucial for the construction and integration of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). This role involves working closely with various institutes to synchronize the integration testing of the ATLAS ITk components, which are constructed at different locations before being transported to CERN for assembly. The successful candidate will be responsible for testing and verifying the integrated ITk Strip Barrel and Endcap structures and services at CERN's surface integration facility. Additionally, the role requires developing software and hardware elements for integration testing, streamlining procedures, and participating in hands-on integration work in cleanroom environments. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in high-energy physics and to be part of a collaborative team dedicated to advancing our understanding of the universe.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Applied Physicist/Engineer include:
Testing and verification of integrated ITk Strip Barrel and Endcap structures and services in the surface integration facility (SR1) at CERN.
Collaborating with integration sites outside CERN, such as DESY or NIKHEF, to synchronize testing and provide troubleshooting support for integration teams.
Developing software and hardware elements for integration testing of ITk Barrel and Endcaps at various integration sites and validating procedures in SR
Streamlining and documenting procedures for ITk integration testing and service validation, extending testing procedures for the ITk Detector post-installation and during commissioning.
Participating hands-on in ITk Detector integration work in the ATLAS SR1 cleanroom and during ITk installation in the cavern, including preparation of equipment in the cavern.
Ensuring high-quality work is delivered on time and fulfilling expectations while adapting to shifting priorities and requirements.
Building and maintaining constructive work relationships within the team and communicating effectively with team members and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. Proven experience in the integration, testing, and operation of silicon detectors for high-energy physics experiments is essential. Additionally, candidates should have demonstrated experience in the integration and commissioning of silicon trackers, including services validation, as well as in the development of DAQ/online software or detector control systems for silicon detectors. Experience in developing and streamlining testing procedures is also required. Previous work on particle detector operation in an experiment and assembly of sensitive equipment in a cleanroom environment would be advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience will also be considered. A strong foundation in physics and engineering principles, particularly as they relate to high-energy physics experiments, is crucial for success in this role.
Experience: Candidates should have proven experience in the integration, testing, and operation of silicon detectors for high-energy physics experiments. This includes experience in the integration and commissioning of silicon trackers, as well as services validation. Demonstrated experience in developing DAQ/online software or detector control systems for silicon detectors is also required. The ideal candidate will have a track record of developing and streamlining testing procedures, with additional experience in particle detector operation and cleanroom assembly being a plus.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a valuable asset for the position. Effective communication skills are essential for collaboration within the diverse teams at CERN.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and requires a valid driving license. Candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
