Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading research institution established in 195
  • It is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics and technology, bringing together physicists and a diverse range of professionals from engineering, technical, scientific, and administrative fields. CERN operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration, pushing the frontiers of science and technology. Diversity is a core value of CERN, and it remains central to its mission and continued success, ensuring that every contribution is valued and driving a shared sense of inclusion and purpose.

Job Overview:
The Instrumentation Engineer position is part of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider project and involves working within the Cryogenic Group. The role requires a full commitment to a multidisciplinary environment focused on cryogenic instrumentation, control systems, and electrical engineering. The engineer will contribute to research and development activities, as well as the design, reception, and maintenance of tooling and test benches used for validation and commissioning operations. The position emphasizes the development of new cryogenic instrumentation, ensuring their design and qualification under complex operating conditions, and providing field support for cryogenic instrumentation deployed across CERN facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities include contributing to the development of new cryogenic instrumentation such as pressure, level, temperature, or heater sensors, ensuring their design and qualification for challenging operating conditions. The engineer will maintain existing test benches based on LabVIEW, develop new test facilities for the qualification of radiation-tolerant electronic cards, and perform calibration of pressure sensors. Field support for cryogenic instrumentation will also be required, including diagnostics, maintenance, and repair activities to ensure reliable operation of the equipment. The role involves testing, calibration, and validation of instrumentation sensors under cryogenic conditions, as well as performance analysis and optimization of cryogenic instrumentation systems.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and possess a professional background in Applied Physics, Electromechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience is required. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree or PhD in Applied Physics, Electromechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field is required for this position. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in the principles of engineering and physics relevant to cryogenic systems and instrumentation.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience post-graduation for those with a Master's degree, or up to 3 years for those with a PhD. Experience with front-end and back-end electronics, real-time data acquisition systems, and performance analysis of cryogenic instrumentation systems is essential. Familiarity with diagnostics and troubleshooting of electrical and instrumentation issues in complex process systems is also required.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse teams at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration is 24 months, with a possible extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and offers hybrid working flexibility. The target start date for this position is December 1, 202
  • The role involves working in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, and a valid driving license is required. The compensation includes a monthly net stipend of either 6372 or 7004 Swiss Francs, depending on the degree, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package.
