Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With over 2,500 employees and thousands of scientists from around the globe collaborating on various projects, CERN operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe. The organization is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge in particle physics and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among a diverse range of professionals.
Job Overview: As an ATLAS Detector Cooling Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the qualification, integration, and commissioning of the 2PACL CO₂ cooling system, which is essential for future upgrades of the ATLAS detector. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in thermal testing, instrumentation, data acquisition (DAQ) development, and the installation of cooling infrastructure. You will be involved in analyzing and interpreting test data, collaborating with detector teams, and contributing to the overall performance validation of the cooling system. This role is integral to the success of a world-leading scientific experiment, and you will be expected to engage in various technical activities that support the integration and commissioning of complex systems.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary responsibilities will include contributing to the testing and validation of detector structures and the 2PACL CO₂ cooling system components. You will participate in the design, construction, and operation of thermal test setups, instrumentation, and DAQ systems. Additionally, you will analyze and interpret test data to assess system performance and support detector integration activities. Collaboration with detector teams will be essential, as you will provide technical feedback and assist in the installation and commissioning of the cooling system, including cooling distribution lines and vacuum infrastructure. You will also be expected to engage in regular stand-by duties, which may include working nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as well as interventions in radiation areas and underground installations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have initial experience in thermal-fluid systems, cooling technologies, or heat transfer, which can be gained through academic, research, or engineering projects. Familiarity with simulation or modeling of thermal and fluid systems is required, along with experience using CAD software for mechanical design. Hands-on experience with instrumentation, laboratory testing, or DAQ systems is essential, as is the ability to analyze and interpret experimental or simulation data. A good understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer principles is necessary, ideally with exposure to two-phase cooling systems. Knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermal-fluid system behavior is also important, as well as the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
Educational Background: Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Refrigeration, or a related field. Candidates without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. It is essential that applicants have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation by the application deadline.
Experience: The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in a relevant engineering field. This experience can be gained through academic, research, or engineering projects that relate to thermal-fluid systems, cooling technologies, or heat transfer.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is considered beneficial for the role.
Additional Notes: The job closing date is set for 28.10.2026 at 23:59 CET, with two open positions available. The contract duration is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. The target start date for this role is 01-January-202
Additional responsibilities include participation in regular stand-by duties, which may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays. A valid driving license is also required. The compensation includes a monthly net stipend ranging from 5266 to 5793 Swiss Francs, depending on the degree, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package.
