Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With over 2,500 employees and thousands of scientists from around the globe collaborating on various projects, CERN operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. The organization is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among a diverse range of professionals including physicists, engineers, and administrative staff. Diversity is a core value at CERN, and it remains central to its mission and continued success.
Job Overview: The position of Laser Scientist at CERN involves working with the Resonance Ionisation Laser Ion Source (RILIS), which is undergoing significant consolidation after over 30 years of operation. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in reinstalling and recommissioning the laser system for ion beam generation, which is essential for supporting a user community of over 1,000 scientists worldwide. The responsibilities include installing lasers and associated hardware and software for continuous operation, testing new pump lasers, and developing new resonance ionisation schemes to transition RILIS into a fully solid-state laser laboratory. The role also requires documenting the laser system and creating detailed operational specifications, as well as participating in the setup and operation of the laser ion source, including on-call duties.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Laser Scientist include:
Installing the lasers and necessary hardware and software to ensure the RILIS operates continuously with automated laser beam stabilization and monitoring.
Testing new pump lasers to ensure optimal performance.
Developing new resonance ionisation schemes aimed at transitioning RILIS into a fully solid-state laser laboratory.
Documenting the laser system and creating a detailed operational requirement specification.
Participating in the setup and operation of the laser ion source, which includes on-call operational duties.
Collaborating with an international multidisciplinary team to solve complex technical problems in experimental environments.
Preparing technical documentation and operational procedures to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate experience in the installation, commissioning, and operation of complex laser systems. A strong background in experimental photonics, laser physics, or optical instrumentation is essential. Experience with laboratory automation, control systems, and scientific software development is also required. Additionally, candidates should have experience preparing technical documentation and operational procedures. Advantageous qualifications include experience with ion sources, accelerator facilities, large-scale scientific infrastructures, vacuum systems, instrumentation, safety systems, or machine operation. Familiarity with high-availability research facilities supporting user programs is also beneficial.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a professional background in Physics, Applied Physics, Photonics, Engineering, or a related field. Candidates should possess either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is important that candidates have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position includes a demonstrated history of working with complex laser systems, particularly in installation, commissioning, and operation. Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience post-graduation for those with a Master's degree, or up to 3 years for those with a PhD. Experience in experimental environments and the ability to diagnose and solve complex technical problems is crucial.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is English, both spoken and written. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is considered advantageous for effective communication within the organization and with the user community.
Additional Notes: This position is fully onsite and involves participation in regular stand-by duties, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays. The selected candidate will work in radiation areas and may be exposed to carcinogens, mutagens, or agents toxic to reproduction. Therefore, obtaining medical clearance is a prerequisite before a contract offer is confirmed. The contract duration is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the target start date for this position is January 1, 202
Compensation includes a monthly net stipend ranging from 6,372 to 7,004 Swiss Francs, depending on the candidate's degree, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package.
