Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge in the field of particle physics, and it operates in multiple countries, fostering a diverse workforce that is central to its success. The organization is known for its collaborative environment, where innovation thrives, and it has a significant impact on scientific research globally.

Job Overview:
As a Planning Engineer within the ATLAS Technical Coordination at CERN, you will be integral to monitoring and managing the ATLAS activities during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). This role involves keeping the installation schedule current, reporting any delays, and proposing effective mitigation strategies to recover lost time. The ATLAS schedule is a complex construction program that includes several sub-projects, requiring close collaboration with various Project Engineers and Project Leaders to understand their constraints and support necessary changes to the schedule baseline. You will also be involved in the Project Management Office (PMO), playing a key role in preparing quarterly status reports and assisting Upgrade Project Leaders in updating schedules and reporting progress.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary duties will include developing and maintaining the ATLAS installation schedules for Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), actively participating in all schedule baseline changes resulting from the evolution of the LS3 program. You will monitor and review the progress of activities during planning meetings in close collaboration with Project Engineers. Reporting any delays to the Technical Coordination Management and proposing mitigation measures to recover lost time will be essential. You will contribute to the maintenance and continuous improvement of scheduling tools and take a leading role in the quarterly status reporting process for the Phase-2 Upgrade projects. Additionally, you will supervise the ATLAS team responsible for developing and maintaining the interface with the ATLAS Oracle database, collecting requirements for the evolution of existing ATLAS information-management tools, and establishing priorities for the maintenance and development activities of a small team of software engineers.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Engineering, preferably in Mechanical, Industrial, Civil, or Systems Engineering, or a related field. You should have demonstrated experience in planning, forecasting, and resource coordination, ideally within an engineering environment, along with strong knowledge of relevant planning software such as MS Project. Experience in liaising with internal and external stakeholders, initial experience in coordinating technical activities, and familiarity with databases and interfacing tools are also valuable assets. Experience in team supervision is considered advantageous.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of the engineering tasks involved in the role and for effectively contributing to the planning and coordination of engineering projects.

Experience:
The position requires a demonstrated level of experience in planning and resource coordination, preferably within an engineering context. Candidates should have a strong background in using planning software and experience in managing technical activities. Initial experience in coordinating projects and supervising teams will be beneficial, as will familiarity with databases and interfacing tools.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should be committed to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication within the diverse workforce at CERN.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The role involves work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is EP-ATL-PO-2026-200-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, increasing with relevant experience, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
