Job Overview:

This section plays a crucial role in supporting countries to strengthen climate information and people-centred multi-hazard early warning systems, which are essential for enhancing resilience to climate-related risks and facilitating climate adaptation and risk-informed decision-making. The intern will be involved in various aspects of project development, research, analysis, and proposal preparation, contributing to the overall mission of UNEP to promote sustainable environmental practices globally. The role is designed to provide practical experience in the field of environmental management and climate resilience, allowing the intern to engage with real-world challenges and solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: supporting the development of project concepts, concept notes, and funding proposals related to climate information and multi-hazard early warning systems; conducting thorough research and analysis to inform project development, which includes understanding country and regional contexts, climate and disaster risks, and relevant policies; collecting, compiling, reviewing, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from various sources to aid in project development; contributing to the preparation of project design elements such as situation analyses, project rationale, theory of change, and results frameworks; conducting desk research and literature reviews on pertinent topics; identifying and analyzing funding opportunities; assisting in the review of project concepts for coherence and alignment with national priorities; preparing research summaries and briefing materials; supporting meetings and consultations related to project development; and performing other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and must commence the internship within one year of graduation. A relevant field of study is essential, including environmental sciences, climate change, meteorology, hydrology, disaster risk management, geography, development studies, economics, public policy, international relations, engineering, or other related fields. Strong research, analytical, and writing skills are highly desirable, particularly the ability to synthesize and present information clearly and concisely.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in a graduate program or being in the final year of an undergraduate program. A degree in fields related to environmental sciences, climate change, or other relevant areas is necessary. This educational foundation is critical for understanding the complexities of climate information and early warning systems, as well as for contributing effectively to the Section's objectives.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, any relevant experience in research, project development, or environmental management will be advantageous. Interns are expected to demonstrate a keen interest in climate issues and a willingness to learn and contribute to the Section's work. Previous internships or volunteer work in related fields can enhance an applicant's profile.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. A working knowledge of other UN official languages, such as French, is desirable and can be beneficial in a multicultural work environment.

This internship is expected to last for a duration of six months. It is important to note that interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
