Job Overview:
The Employment Specialist position in Iowa is designed to assist newly arrived refugees and other qualified immigrants in achieving self-sufficiency through employment. This role involves guiding clients through employment preparation, coordinating job placements, and providing various career advancement services. The Employment Specialist will conduct client intake and assessments, develop comprehensive employment plans, and offer job readiness coaching. The position requires building long-term relationships with local employers and staffing agencies to identify suitable job opportunities for clients. Additionally, the Employment Specialist will monitor client job performance and assist with any post-placement issues, ensuring that clients are supported throughout their employment journey. This role is crucial in helping clients navigate the job market and achieve their career goals, ultimately contributing to their successful integration into the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Employment Specialist will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: conducting intake assessments and providing program orientation to eligible clients; developing individualized employment plans and budget strategies for each employable adult; offering job readiness and job search coaching; connecting clients with job opportunities; cultivating relationships with local employers and staffing agencies to identify job openings; assisting clients and employers with post-placement issues; monitoring client job performance and wage levels; documenting client interactions in accordance with program requirements; inputting client information into databases and assisting with tracking and reporting; collaborating with coworkers and partner organizations; building relationships with area service providers to benefit clients; using personal, insured vehicles or public transportation to travel and transport clients and materials; and potentially training and leading support staff, volunteers, and interns. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Employment Specialist position should possess a Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field of study, although relevant professional experience in the workforce development field is also highly valued. A minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role is strongly preferred, particularly experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations. Familiarity with job placement and job readiness training is considered a plus. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong relationship-building skills, diplomacy, and networking abilities, with a proven track record of effective communication in a multicultural environment. Self-motivation, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively are essential for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The preferred educational background for the Employment Specialist position is a Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field. This educational foundation equips candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively support clients in their employment journey and navigate the complexities of workforce development.

Experience:
The position requires relevant professional experience in the workforce development field, with a minimum of 2 years of experience strongly preferred. Languages:

  • The Employment Specialist will work in a combination of standard office environments, remote settings, and field locations within the service delivery area. The role may require occasional weekend and/or evening work. Compensation for this position ranges from $21.00 to $22.80 per hour, depending on various factors such as the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget considerations.
