Job Overview: The GIS Expert will provide planning and design outputs related to UN-Habitat's technical support for the Geneva Technical Hub 2.0 initiative. This role involves offering technical support for the processing, organization, and management of GIS layers for Sahab City, as well as developing a GIS-based operation and maintenance plan for pilot interventions, including the Eco Park and Green Buffer. The position is home-based and expected to last for three months. The GIS expert will work closely with the Urban Lab team and the Jordan Country Office, reporting to the Programme Management Officers and coordinating with the GTH 2.0 Secretariat. The expert will be responsible for preparing materials for workshops, drafting and revising planning materials, and participating in technical missions as required.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the GIS Expert will fulfill the following duties and responsibilities: - Prepare materials such as presentations, maps, and drawings for workshops with city and county officials and technical staff. - Draft, revise, and complete planning materials, including spatial analysis and drawings, as well as reports. - Participate in technical missions if required, ensuring effective collaboration with the Urban Lab team and other stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a minimum advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Urban Geography, GIS analysis, or a related field relevant to sustainable urban development. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additionally, at least 2 years of proven experience in drawing and preparing graphical materials using computer-assisted design tools is required, with a strong focus on data management and processing using GIS software. Good hand drawing and sketching skills for macro-scale plans are advantageous, as well as strong analytic and design skills in regional and citywide planning. Experience in regional and territorial scale planning and working in forced displacement contexts will be considered an asset.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a minimum of a Master's degree or equivalent in Urban Geography, GIS analysis, or a related field that is pertinent to sustainable urban development. A first-level university degree may be accepted if combined with relevant qualifying experience.
Experience: The position requires at least 2 years of proven experience in preparing graphical materials and conducting spatial analysis using GIS software. Experience in regional and territorial scale planning, as well as working in contexts involving forced displacement, is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered desirable.
