Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With over 2,500 employees and thousands of scientists from around the globe, CERN operates in multiple countries, focusing on fundamental physics research. The organization is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics, including the development of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which has made significant contributions to our understanding of the universe. CERN's mission is to push the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among a diverse range of professionals.
Job Overview: The Mechanical DesignEngineer for LHCb will join the LHCb Technical coordination-section" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Coordination section, contributing to the design office's efforts in CAD modeling of the LHCb detector. This role involves developing methodologies for digital mock-ups and digital twins, which are essential for installation planning, maintenance, and operational support for upcoming milestones of the LHCb experiment. The engineer will work closely with physicists, engineers, and technicians to translate conceptual requirements into practical engineering solutions, ensuring that the mechanical systems are designed effectively to meet the experimental needs. This position is crucial for the successful implementation of the LHCb project, which aims to explore the fundamental properties of matter and the universe.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the following duties:
Contributing to the conceptual design and development of mechanical systems for the LHCb experiment.
Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of physicists, engineers, and technicians to ensure that the design meets the experimental requirements.
Producing comprehensive engineering documentation, including technical specifications, 3D models, and manufacturing drawings.
Supporting the manufacturing, assembly, testing, and installation of mechanical equipment.
Engaging in the development of digital twin methodologies to enhance the operational efficiency of the LHCb detector.
Participating in design reviews and providing technical input to ensure compliance with engineering standards and best practices.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess initial experience in designing mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD software. Knowledge of CATIA V5 and PDM/PLM environments is highly desirable, as is familiarity with structured engineering data management. Exposure to machining, assembly, and testing of mechanical systems is considered an advantage. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively in an international, multidisciplinary team and possess strong 3D CAD modeling and 2D drafting skills. A good understanding of mechanical drawing standards, dimensioning, tolerancing (ISO GPS), materials, and manufacturing processes is essential.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Applicants must have graduated within the last two years and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Those without a university degree or with a PhD are not eligible for this position.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This experience should ideally include practical exposure to mechanical design and engineering processes, as well as familiarity with CAD software and engineering documentation.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse international team at CERN.
Additional Notes: The position is fully onsite and involves working in radiation areas and underground installations, requiring the selected candidate to obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the target start date for this position is January 1, 202
Compensation includes a monthly net stipend ranging from 5266 to 5793 Swiss Francs, depending on the candidate's degree, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, and additional family allowances. A relocation package is also available based on individual circumstances.
