Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to push the frontiers of science and technology, CERN employs thousands of staff members from diverse backgrounds, including physicists, engineers, technicians, and administrative professionals. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration. CERN is known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, which are core values that have been integral to its success since its inception. The organization is dedicated to uncovering the mysteries of the universe and advancing our understanding of fundamental physics.

Job Overview:
The position of Developer for the CMS Level-1 Trigger is crucial in the preparation for the High-Luminosity LHC phase. The CMS collaboration is undertaking an ambitious upgrade of its online selection system, specifically the Level-1 (L1) trigger. This upgraded system will utilize advanced FPGA processors connected via a high-bandwidth network, enabling the implementation of more sophisticated online algorithms, such as Particle Flow reconstruction. As a developer, you will play a key role in the development of these algorithms, their implementation in firmware, and the evaluation of their physics performance. This position not only involves technical development but also requires collaboration with various teams and presenting findings at international conferences, making it a dynamic and impactful role within the CERN community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Developer for the CMS Level-1 Trigger include: contributing to the development of algorithms for the CMS Level-1 trigger; integrating and maintaining contributions from other developers to support collaborative project development; evaluating the physics performance of the algorithms and contributing to the development of monitoring systems; participating in the hardware testing and installation of the upgraded trigger system; collaborating closely with members of the CMS L1 trigger groups at CERN; presenting project progress and results at collaboration meetings, workshops, and international conferences; and supervising team members, ensuring effective collaboration and project advancement.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess experience in FPGA firmware development using HDL and High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools. A background in data analysis, particularly in high-energy physics, is preferred. Practical experience in developing and applying machine learning solutions to real-world problems is essential. Familiarity with Continuous Integration (CI) and quality assurance techniques and tools is also required. Knowledge of trigger or data acquisition systems and their associated hardware, such as high-speed optical links, would be advantageous. Strong collaborative skills and effective communication are critical for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a professional background in Physics or a related field. Candidates must hold either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a significant level of experience, specifically in FPGA firmware development and data analysis within the context of high-energy physics. Candidates with a Master's degree should have 2 to 6 years of relevant professional experience, while those with a PhD should have up to 3 years of experience. This experience should include practical applications of machine learning and familiarity with CI and quality assurance techniques.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication is essential. Candidates are also expected to have a commitment to learning French, which would be beneficial for collaboration within the CERN community.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers flexibility with a hybrid working model. The target start date for this position is January 1, 202
  • The role may involve interventions in underground installations, which is an important aspect of the job. The compensation includes a monthly net stipend ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, depending on the candidate's degree. Additional benefits include 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
