Job Posting Organization: The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA operates across various countries, focusing on space science, Earth observation, human spaceflight, and satellite navigation, among other areas. The organization is committed to fostering international cooperation in space exploration and technology development.
Job Overview: The Luxembourgish National Graduate Trainee in Robotics position is part of the ESA National Graduate Trainee (NGT) Programmes, which provide recent Master’s graduates with the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in various space-related disciplines. This specific role is situated within the Mechatronics and Optics Division, particularly in the Robotics Section at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The trainee will engage in tasks related to the design, engineering, and verification of space automation and robotics systems, contributing to the development of innovative technologies for space missions. The position emphasizes collaboration with ESA engineers and specialists, allowing the trainee to work on feasibility assessments, breadboarding, and verification of robotic systems, thereby enhancing their understanding of the space sector and its operational challenges.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Luxembourgish National Graduate Trainee in Robotics include:
Supporting the Robotics Section in various tasks related to orbital and planetary robotics, as well as human-robot interaction.
Conducting feasibility assessments for new automation and robotics concepts in space missions.
Engaging in breadboarding and demonstration of automation and robotics systems, including robots, rovers, and air-bearing platforms.
Verifying existing automation and robotics systems through rigorous testing and analysis.
Performing mathematical modeling and simulations to support project objectives.
Organizing and extending laboratory facilities to enhance operational readiness.
Collaborating with ESA engineers and specialists to ensure successful project outcomes.
Contributing to the development of innovative solutions in the fields of robot perception, control, autonomy, and user interfacing.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong foundation in robotics or a related engineering field, with a focus on system aspects and a solid understanding of core engineering domains such as mechatronics, control theory, computer science, or image processing. Proficiency in computer-aided engineering tools and programming languages is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team. Previous experience in international teams is considered an asset, and candidates should be motivated and have clear career goals that align with the objectives of the ESA.
Educational Background: Applicants should have completed, or be in the final year of a master's degree in robotics, computer science, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, control engineering, or space engineering. A strong academic background in mathematics and physics is essential, as these subjects underpin the technical competencies required for the role. The educational qualifications should reflect a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices relevant to robotics and automation in space applications.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have relevant experience gained through internships, project work, or extracurricular activities related to robotics and engineering. While specific years of experience are not mandated, a demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings is crucial. Candidates should showcase their involvement in projects that highlight their skills in robotics, automation, or related fields, as well as their capacity to work collaboratively in team environments.
Languages: The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory for the position. Knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the diverse ESA workforce.
Additional Notes: This position is a National Graduate Trainee role, which typically involves a fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will be expected to work full-time and may be required to undergo selection tests during the recruitment process. Additionally, candidates must be eligible to access information and technology subject to European or US export control regulations. The ESA is committed to diversity and inclusiveness, welcoming applications from all qualified candidates regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics.
