Job Overview:
The Private Sector Engagement Adviser will play a crucial role in leading initiatives that enhance the involvement of businesses and industry stakeholders in the development of an inclusive and sustainable Blue Economy. This position is centered on improving access to finance for coastal communities, expanding market opportunities for local businesses, promoting the adoption of appropriate technologies, and fostering gender-responsive business practices that specifically benefit coastal youth and women. The adviser will collaborate closely with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), financial institutions, value chain actors, and development partners to unlock investment opportunities and scale innovative solutions across coastal communities. The role requires a strategic mindset and the ability to engage effectively with various stakeholders to drive impactful change.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Required Qualifications:
Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, environmental science, or a related field is required. A master's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant area is preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in private sector engagement, business development, or a related field is required. Experience working in developing countries and with coastal communities is highly desirable.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in coastal communities is an advantage and would enhance communication and engagement efforts.
Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer role with VSO, and as such, it includes an allowance paid in local currency to cover reasonable living expenses in the country. However, the allowance may not be sufficient to send money home. Accommodation provided will vary and may be basic, reflecting the organization's work with some of the poorest communities in the world. The application process includes a registration form, a values self-assessment, and assessments focusing on information processing and work approach. Candidates requiring adjustments due to disabilities or other circumstances are encouraged to reach out to VSO for support.

- Identify and promote opportunities for SMEs to access finance and expand their market reach.
- Facilitate the adoption of appropriate technologies that support sustainable practices in coastal communities.
- Advocate for gender-responsive business practices that empower coastal youth and women.
- Collaborate with financial institutions to develop tailored financial products that meet the needs of local businesses.
- Work with value chain actors to identify barriers to investment and develop strategies to overcome them.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of initiatives on the Blue Economy and report findings to stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with development partners to align efforts and resources.
- Provide training and capacity-building support to local businesses and stakeholders. 1
- Represent VSO at relevant forums and events to promote the organization's mission and objectives.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience in private sector engagement, business development, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of the Blue Economy and its relevance to sustainable development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on results.
- Experience in project management and monitoring and evaluation processes.
- Knowledge of gender-responsive approaches in business practices is an advantage.
