Job Overview: The Director for Europe Sustainable Infrastructure Energy will hold a pivotal role within the EBRD, overseeing the Bank's energy sector activities across Central Europe, the Baltic States, Southeastern Europe, and Ukraine. This position entails a comprehensive responsibility for all financing products and policy dialogues with stakeholders in the energy sector. The Director will lead a dedicated team in the origination, structuring, execution, implementation, and monitoring of energy-related transactions. The role requires a strategic mindset to design and deliver an ambitious policy agenda while ensuring compliance with EBRD’s operational principles and transition mandate. The Director will report directly to the Managing Director of the Sustainable Infrastructure Group and will be expected to travel frequently within the region, including to Kyiv, to engage with various stakeholders and oversee project developments.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Director will be accountable for the team's performance in meeting both quantitative and qualitative objectives outlined in the annual scorecard, which aligns with the broader business group objectives and the Bank's annual business plan. Responsibilities include supervising the team's budget and resources, ensuring compliance with the Bank's procurement and budget processes, and proposing strategic directions for the energy sector. The Director will oversee the origination and execution of investment projects, ensuring high standards of analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">financial analysis and project monitoring. Additionally, the role involves conducting market analysis, engaging in policy dialogue, and ensuring thorough inter-departmental consultations on projects. Furthermore, the Director will lead the Energy Europe team, focusing on recruitment, performance management, and adherence to the Bank's integrity procedures.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong leadership skills and a proven track record in the financial industry, particularly in roles that require high-level commercial and technical expertise. The ability to manage complex tasks and conflicting priorities is essential, along with a people-centered approach to management that fosters team performance. Candidates should demonstrate diplomatic communication and negotiation skills, with a sensitivity to cultural differences and political complexities in the region. A collegial approach to management and the ability to build effective relationships in a multicultural environment are also critical. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are mandatory, and knowledge of another relevant language is desirable.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in finance, economics, business administration, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees such as an MBA or equivalent are preferred, as they provide a deeper understanding of the financial and operational aspects of the energy sector.
Experience: Candidates should have significant experience in the financial industry, ideally with a background in investment banking, private equity, or asset management. Extensive experience leading complex transactions throughout their lifecycle is crucial, along with a demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement substantive policy reforms. Experience in the energy sector, particularly in Europe, is highly desirable, as is a proven capacity to navigate challenging business environments and manage teams effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with additional languages relevant to the European region considered an asset. This linguistic capability will enhance communication with diverse stakeholders and facilitate effective policy dialogue.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time role with a fixed-term contract lasting four years. The Director will be based in London, Belgrade, or Warsaw, with expectations for regular travel across the region.
