Job Overview:
The Protection Officer - Monitoring will play a crucial role in implementing protection monitoring activities under the technical supervision of the Protection Manager. This position is essential for planning and conducting visits to communities to monitor protection issues, collect data, and report on trends and risks. The officer will be responsible for identifying individuals at risk and providing direct assistance to those with specific needs. The role also involves contributing to broader protection activities that DRC is implementing in the area, ensuring that all actions align with international standards and best practices. The officer will engage with community members, gather information, and collaborate with various sectors to enhance the effectiveness of protection services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Officer - Monitoring will be tasked with developing a comprehensive work plan for protection monitoring activities, ensuring that these activities are executed in accordance with DRC guidelines and international standards. Responsibilities include conducting protection monitoring visits, collecting data through various methods such as Key Information Interviews and Focus Group Discussions, and analyzing the information gathered. The officer will collaborate with the Protection Manager and other stakeholders to review protection trends and recommend appropriate responses. Additionally, the officer will conduct service mapping, support the identification of individuals with specific needs, and facilitate referrals to relevant services. Community engagement is a key aspect of this role, requiring the officer to raise awareness about protection risks and establish community action plans. Regular reporting and documentation of activities, including the development of project proposals and concept notes, will also be part of the officer's responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of 3 years of experience in a relevant field, ideally within humanitarian response, development, or refugee protection. Strong communication skills in English and local languages are essential, along with the ability to conduct interviews and write reports. Experience in protection monitoring or assessments using online data collection tools is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required, and candidates should exhibit integrity and a strong work ethic.

Educational Background:
A university degree or diploma in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses may also be beneficial.

Experience:
The position requires at least 3 years of experience in an entry to mid-level role, specifically in humanitarian response, development, or refugee protection. Experience working with displaced populations or in conflict-affected areas is particularly valuable, as is familiarity with protection monitoring methodologies and data collection tools.

Languages:
Fluency in both English and Amharic is mandatory, with excellent skills in speaking, reading, and writing in both languages. Proficiency in additional local languages may be considered an asset.

The contract for this position is for 12 months, classified as a national contract under Band H
  • The designated duty stations are Jigjiga and Dire Dawa in Ethiopia, with a start date of October 15, 202
