Job Overview:
The Protection Officer – Legal will play a crucial role in the Danish Refugee Council's operations in Ethiopia, specifically under the SIDA Mixed Migration project framework. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about providing legal aid and protection services to vulnerable populations, including migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons. The officer will work under the supervision of the Protection Project Manager and will be responsible for implementing legal aid activities, which include legal information dissemination, counseling, and facilitating representation for the target population. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying legal needs and concerns within the community, as well as developing strategies to address these issues effectively. The officer will also engage in advocacy efforts to influence policy changes that benefit people on the move, ensuring that their rights are protected and upheld. This position demands strong analytical skills, interpersonal abilities, and a commitment to ethical practices in humanitarian work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Officer – Legal will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to: developing a comprehensive work plan for legal service provision; conducting rapid assessments to identify the legal needs of the target population; disseminating information on legal rights and civil documentation; providing legal counseling and assistance; supporting advocacy efforts by analyzing legal gaps; developing and distributing informational materials on legal rights; facilitating access to legal documentation in collaboration with government authorities; organizing capacity-building sessions for stakeholders; mapping legal aid providers along migration routes; coordinating with other project teams and partners; and preparing regular reports on project implementation and challenges. The officer will also be expected to perform additional duties as assigned by the Protection Project Manager to ensure the successful achievement of project objectives.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of three years of work experience in the legal sector, preferably within a humanitarian context and migration projects. They should have demonstrated experience in providing legal information, counseling, and assistance to vulnerable populations. Familiarity with Ethiopia's judicial system and international laws related to the rights of people on the move is essential. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of protection principles and minimum standards, as well as excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for developing and maintaining effective working relationships across the organization. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is also required.
Educational Background:
A university degree in law from a recognized institution is mandatory for this position. Candidates should also possess any relevant certifications or licenses that enhance their qualifications for providing legal aid and protection services.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant work experience in the legal sector, with a focus on humanitarian contexts and migration-related projects. Candidates should have experience working with diverse populations, including migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons, and should be familiar with the challenges faced by these groups in accessing legal services and protections.
Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is required, as the role involves communication with international stakeholders and documentation in English. Knowledge of local languages is also essential, as it will facilitate effective communication with the target population and enhance the delivery of legal services.
