Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe. The organization operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and their interactions.

Job Overview:
As a Power System Physicist/Engineer for the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), you will be integral to the development, integration, testing, and commissioning of power systems for one of the most innovative particle detectors ever created. This role requires collaboration within a multinational, multidisciplinary team, focusing on the procurement and testing of power supplies for HGCAL detector modules. You will work with low-voltage, high-current supplies for readout electronics and medium-voltage supplies for sensor biasing, ensuring the integration of power systems with safety, control, and monitoring systems. A significant aspect of your role will involve assessing the impact of power systems on HGCAL performance and developing strategies to minimize noise effects, such as interference and ripple. This position offers a unique opportunity to blend electrical engineering expertise with hands-on involvement in the construction and commissioning of a state-of-the-art particle detector.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary responsibilities will include overseeing the procurement of power supplies, conducting acceptance and stress tests on delivered units, and supporting the commissioning of these systems during the assembly and testing phases of HGCAL. You will collaborate with physicists and engineers to evaluate HGCAL's performance concerning its power systems and develop mitigation strategies as necessary. Additionally, you will oversee the installation and testing of power systems underground, including cable installation and integration into safety and monitoring systems. Your role will also involve ensuring compliance with technical specifications and validating detector components through rigorous testing.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree or PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or have equivalent relevant experience. A strong track record in testing, operating, and debugging power systems for complex devices, particularly in high-energy physics experiments, is essential. Experience with silicon- or scintillator-based particle detectors is advantageous, as is familiarity with large-scale procurement of electronic systems. The ability to work effectively within diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians is highly valued.

Educational Background:
A Master's Degree or PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates should have a solid foundation in electrical engineering principles and practices, particularly as they relate to power systems and particle detection technologies.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in testing, operating, and debugging power systems for complex devices, particularly those used in high-energy physics experiments. Experience with procurement processes for electronic systems, as well as hands-on experience with particle detectors, is highly desirable. The ability to work collaboratively in multinational and multicultural teams is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a significant advantage. Proficiency in additional languages may also be beneficial, depending on the team's composition and project requirements.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires full-time onsite work, with a 40-hour work week. Candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas and underground installations, and may be required to work nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is EP-CMS-EC-2026-189-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary, comprehensive health insurance, paid leave, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances.
