Job Overview: As the Field Coordinator for the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), you will be instrumental in coordinating and overseeing the assembly, integration, testing, and commissioning of one of the most innovative particle detectors ever conceived. This position requires you to work within a multinational, multidisciplinary team, where you will help coordinate the mass assembly and testing of HGCAL detector elements, known as 'cassettes', on the surface. You will also be responsible for their integration into the complete 250-tonne detector and the subsequent system-level testing. Additionally, you will contribute to the installation and commissioning of HGCAL approximately 100 meters underground within the CMS, which includes the integration and testing of essential services such as CO2 cooling, dry gas, cabling, and optical fibers. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine strong technical coordination skills with hands-on involvement in the construction and commissioning of a large-scale, state-of-the-art particle detector, making it a pivotal position within the project.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary duties will include overseeing the operation and maintenance of the HGCAL assembly and testing facilities at CERN, which consist of large ISO 7 cleanrooms and a large assembly hall equipped with high-power electrical and cooling infrastructure. You will be responsible for planning and organizing the execution of all interventions in these facilities. Additionally, you will provide technical support to physicists, engineers, and technicians utilizing these facilities, which involves liaising with the HGCAL Technical Coordinators and Safety Officer, as well as with the central CMS Technical Coordination team and CERN service groups. You will plan and supervise all activities related to the large-scale detector integration, including cassette insertion and stacking, mechanical and electrical connections, installation and testing of the HGCAL thermal screen, and cold testing of the complete detector. Furthermore, you will work with the HGCAL team to plan and execute tests of HGCAL sectors on the surface and inside CMS, ensure the safe transport of large and delicate HGCAL structures around the site, and oversee logistics for HGCAL-related items, including detector modules, cassettes, ancillary equipment, and mechanical components.
Required Qualifications: To be considered for this position, you must possess a Master's Degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. You should have a strong track record in planning and coordinating facilities for the assembly and testing of complex devices, such as particle detectors. Demonstrated experience in the assembly and testing of particle detectors, particularly those based on silicon sensors, is highly advantageous. Familiarity with project planning tools such as Merlin and MS Project is also required. Proven ability to work successfully and efficiently within multinational, multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians is essential.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a Master's Degree or PhD in Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. This educational background is crucial as it provides the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for the role, particularly in understanding the complexities of particle detectors and their assembly processes.

Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The job requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and is fully onsite. Candidates should be prepared to work in radiation areas, perform interventions in underground installations, and possess a valid driving license. The role may also require working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, depending on the needs of the organization.
