Job Overview: The Mechanical ManufacturingEngineer position is situated within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group at CERN, which has over 40 years of expertise in mechanical design, manufacturing, and assembly of accelerator and detector devices. The role involves the fabrication of complex components utilizing a variety of advanced technologies, including machining, forming, and welding. The engineer will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to develop equipment and components for various research and development projects, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Long Shutdown (LS3) where significant upgrades to the accelerator complex will occur. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with industrial partners and gain exposure to diverse manufacturing environments, as it includes visits to suppliers in CERN Member States.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for several key tasks, including: collaborating with project stakeholders such as project engineers, designers, and draftsmen to contribute to the design-for-manufacturing phase; reviewing and revising 2D drawings with a focus on geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing; defining make-or-buy strategies to determine the production of components; preparing technical specifications and documentation for tenders and price inquiries; coordinating fabrication schedules and following up on internal manufacturing activities; leading preparatory activities for fabrication, including defining and procuring raw materials and preparing fabrication sequences with QA/QC considerations; and managing subcontracted production by external companies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess proficiency in reading and interpreting 2D drawings and 3D CAD models, with a strong understanding of ISO geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing. Knowledge of manufacturing methods and work preparation is essential, along with familiarity in precision assembly of mechanical structures and equipment. Experience with materials such as Stainless Steels, Aluminum, and Copper Alloys is required, as well as the ability to write technical specifications and fabrication reports. Additional skills in CNC machining techniques, CAD/CAM tools, and knowledge of pressure vessels, cryogenic devices, vacuum chambers, and mechanical structures are considered assets. Knowledge of joining techniques such as welding (TIG, MIG, EBW), brazing, and soldering is also beneficial.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience is required, or alternatively, a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Candidates must also be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a solid level of experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in manufacturing processes and project collaboration. Those with a Master's degree should have between 2 to 6 years of relevant professional experience, while candidates with a PhD should have up to 3 years of experience in the field. This experience should ideally include hands-on work in manufacturing environments and collaboration on engineering projects.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is the working language at CERN. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is considered beneficial for effective communication within the organization and with local partners.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time role with a contract duration of 24 months, which may be extended up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the target start date for the position is November 1, 202
The role requires a valid driving license. The compensation includes a monthly net stipend ranging from 6,372 to 7,004 Swiss Francs, depending on the candidate's degree. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year, along with 2 weeks of annual closure.
