Job Overview: The UNEP Communication Intern will play a vital role in supporting the NZNP Global Platform within the Finance and Economics Branch of UNEP's Industry and Economy Division. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about environmental issues and communication. The intern will assist in various tasks related to global events, outreach, digital communications, content development, and monitoring analytics. The intern will be expected to engage with multiple stakeholders, including countries, implementing partners, and donors, to promote the objectives of the NZNP Global Platform. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in international environmental communication and outreach, contributing to the global efforts towards sustainable development and green economy initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's responsibilities will include supporting the planning and coordination of global and regional events, managing contact lists, drafting event materials, and assisting with outreach communications such as newsletters and project updates. The intern will also help manage the NZNP Global Platform's web presence by drafting and updating website content, organizing resources, and ensuring accessibility standards are met. Additionally, the intern will be involved in content development, including drafting articles, success stories, and other communications products. The role will require coordination with various partners to gather communications inputs and promote joint activities. The intern will also assist in tracking communications activities and analyzing performance metrics to inform future outreach efforts. Other tasks may be assigned as needed to support the NZNP Global Platform's objectives.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in a graduate school program, be in the final academic year of a first university degree program, or have graduated with a university degree within the past year. A degree or academic background in communications, journalism, international relations, public policy, environmental studies, sustainable development, marketing, or a related field is preferred. While professional work experience is not required, demonstrated interest or experience in communications, digital content, event coordination, or stakeholder outreach is desirable. Knowledge of environmental sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, sustainable finance, or international development is also beneficial but not mandatory.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess a degree or be pursuing a degree in a relevant field such as communications, journalism, international relations, public policy, environmental studies, sustainable development, or marketing. The internship is open to those who are currently enrolled in a graduate program or in their final year of undergraduate studies, as well as recent graduates who have completed their degree within the last year.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in communications and outreach related to environmental issues. Experience in developing written or visual communications products, managing web or social media content, supporting newsletters, or organizing events would be advantageous. Familiarity with environmental sustainability topics is a plus, but not a strict requirement.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of French, which is one of the working languages of the United Nations, is also necessary. Additionally, knowledge of another UN language, particularly Spanish, is desirable and would enhance the candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Switzerland may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. The internship is limited to a maximum duration of six months, and candidates who have completed this duration are not eligible for further internships with the United Nations Secretariat.
