Online Volunteer for Immunization Awareness
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The World Health Organization (WHO) was established on April 7, 1948, as the directing and coordinating authority in global public health within the United Nations system. Its mission is to ensure that all people attain the highest possible level of health. WHO's objectives include promoting health, keeping the world safe, and serving vulnerable populations. The Lao People's Democratic Republic became a member of WHO on May 17, 1950, and has since developed a strong partnership with WHO, particularly in the health sector. The organization has grown from fewer than 20 staff members at its inception in Laos to over 50 international and national staff members and more than 100 non-staff members today, reflecting its commitment to health improvements in the region.
Job Overview:
The WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WHO WPRO) is focused on improving health and well-being across the region. Immunization is recognized as one of the most effective public health interventions, preventing millions of deaths annually and protecting communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. As part of its communications efforts leading up to the WHO Regional Committee Meeting in October 2026, WHO WPRO is mobilizing Online Volunteers to raise awareness about immunization. Volunteers will engage in sharing evidence-based immunization messages and encouraging informed discussions within their communities and online networks. This role is crucial in highlighting WHO's regional immunization priorities through 2030, which include eliminating measles and rubella, reducing the number of zero-dose children, strengthening life-course immunization, and promoting equitable access to routine immunization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Online Volunteers will be responsible for sharing 1-2 posts per week on their personal social media platforms, utilizing various formats such as images, videos, and text-based content. They will highlight evidence-based immunization messages provided by WHO or create original posts inspired by WHO's key messages. Volunteers must participate in a mandatory virtual orientation session in early September to understand WHO's immunization priorities and campaign objectives. They will also attend two virtual learning sessions throughout the campaign, focusing on immunization, vaccine confidence, health communication, and countering misinformation. Volunteers are expected to encourage respectful conversations on social media regarding the importance of immunization and promote accurate health information. They will track their engagement activities using monitoring forms provided by WHO and UNV, ensuring that they do not provide independent medical advice or respond to individual medical inquiries. Additionally, there is an opportunity to become a Group Coordinator, which involves additional responsibilities such as supporting group members, ensuring engagement metrics are tracked, and compiling a report at the end of the campaign.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong communication skills, particularly in social media engagement. They should be enthusiastic about public health and immunization, with a willingness to learn and share information. Volunteers must be able to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative and creativity in their posts. Familiarity with WHO's health messaging and the ability to engage constructively in discussions about immunization are essential. Volunteers should also be comfortable using various social media platforms and tools for tracking engagement.
Educational Background:
While there are no specific educational requirements for this volunteer position, a background in public health, communications, social sciences, or a related field would be advantageous. Volunteers should have a good understanding of health communication principles and the importance of immunization in public health.
Experience:
Previous experience in social media management, community engagement, or public health advocacy is preferred but not mandatory. Volunteers should demonstrate a commitment to health promotion and the ability to engage with diverse audiences effectively.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and training materials will be provided in English. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in the Western Pacific region would be beneficial but is not required.
Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position running from September 14 to October 22, 202
