Job Overview:
The Software Engineer position at CERN's Scientific Information Service involves contributing to the development of various platforms utilized by researchers globally. The role focuses on designing, developing, and operating backend applications, APIs, and data processing workflows primarily using Python and Django. Additionally, the engineer will integrate machine learning and AI capabilities into these platforms, enhancing functionalities such as information extraction, classification, and semantic search. The position emphasizes practical applications of emerging technologies rather than theoretical research, aiming to improve the connectivity and efficiency of scientific information systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Software Engineer will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating scientific information applications using Python and Django. This includes creating APIs, data models, and data processing workflows. The engineer will also integrate machine learning and AI capabilities into production systems, utilizing technologies like Large Language Models and semantic search. Responsibilities include evaluating new AI technologies for practical applications, ensuring software quality through automated testing and code reviews, and collaborating with other engineers and product owners to devise technical solutions and architectural designs.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field. Strong professional experience in Python and software engineering is essential, particularly in backend development with Django or similar frameworks. Familiarity with API design, relational databases, and maintainable production software is required. Knowledge of data-intensive applications and modern AI technologies is also necessary, with experience in tools like Apache Airflow, React, TypeScript, OpenSearch, or Elasticsearch considered an asset.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong foundation in software engineering principles and practices, particularly in Python programming and backend development.

Experience:
The position requires strong professional experience in Python and software engineering, particularly in backend development with Django or a comparable framework. Candidates should have experience with data-intensive applications and data processing workflows, as well as a good understanding of modern Large Language Model technologies and their integration into software systems. Experience with specific tools and technologies such as Apache Airflow, React, TypeScript, OpenSearch, or Elasticsearch is advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a valuable asset for the role. Proficiency in additional languages may also be beneficial but is not required.
