Job Overview: The Mechanical ManufacturingEngineer position is situated within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group at CERN, which has over 40 years of expertise in mechanical design, manufacturing, and assembly of accelerator and detector devices. Duties and Responsibilities: The Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for several key tasks: collaborating with project stakeholders, including project engineers, designers, and draftsmen, to contribute to the design-for-manufacturing phase; reviewing and revising 2D drawings with a focus on geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing; defining make-or-buy strategies to determine the production of components; preparing technical specifications and documentation for tenders and price inquiries; coordinating fabrication schedules and following up on internal manufacturing activities; leading preparatory activities for fabrication, including defining and procuring raw materials and preparing fabrication sequences with quality assurance and control aspects; and managing subcontracted production carried out by external companies. This comprehensive set of responsibilities ensures that the engineer plays a crucial role in the successful fabrication of components essential for CERN's projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess proficiency in reading and interpreting 2D drawings and 3D CAD models, particularly with ISO geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing. A solid understanding of manufacturing methods and work preparation is essential, along with familiarity in precision assembly of mechanical structures and equipment. Experience with materials such as Stainless Steels, Aluminum, and Copper Alloys is required, as well as the ability to write technical specifications and fabrication reports. Knowledge of CNC machining techniques, CAD/CAM tools, and joining techniques like welding, brazing, and soldering is considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should have a commitment to learning French, as spoken and written English is mandatory.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and to have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Candidates should hold either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is important that candidates have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
