Job Overview:
The Head of Business Development (HBD) for the WACAR region plays a crucial role in leading IRC's business development efforts in support of country programs. Reporting to the Director of Awards Management, the HBD collaborates closely with business development leadership to develop and implement IRC's global business development strategy. This position is responsible for strategic planning, donor outreach, pre-positioning, proposal development, and ensuring compliance with donor policies. The HBD oversees the regional pipeline and supports country business development strategies, ensuring appropriate resourcing for successful bid submissions. The role requires a strategic vision for regional business development efforts, aligning with country Strategy Action Plans (SAP).
Duties and Responsibilities:
The HBD is responsible for providing strategic vision on regional business development efforts, maintaining visibility on the overall pipeline across public and institutional donors, and advising on donor engagement and support needs. The HBD leads the development of business development strategies at regional and country levels, coordinates support to country teams in identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, and manages the regional Program Development Advisor(s). The role includes overseeing the end-to-end program development process, ensuring effective proposal management, compliance with donor expectations, and facilitating internal reviews to capture lessons learned. The HBD also engages with donors and partners, supports capacity building and training for IRC staff, and supervises direct reports to ensure effective team management and development.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have substantial experience leading large proposal teams on complex, multi-year, multi-partner proposals with minimal supervision. A successful track record in developing humanitarian and development proposals for NGOs is essential. Strong proficiency in English and French is required, along with experience in strategies and proposal processes of key government/statutory donors. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively in a multicultural environment. Candidates should demonstrate clear writing skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively.
Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required, typically including a degree in international development, humanitarian studies, or a related field. Advanced degrees may be preferred, particularly for senior roles within the organization.
Experience:
Candidates should have extensive experience in business development, particularly within the humanitarian or development sectors. Experience working in West and Central Africa is highly desirable, as is familiarity with donor compliance and proposal budgeting. The ability to travel internationally (approximately 20% of the time) is also necessary for this role.
Languages:
Proficiency in English and French is mandatory. Additional languages relevant to the WACAR region may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with local partners and stakeholders.
