Job Overview:
The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office is seeking interns for Communications and Knowledge Management to support various initiatives aimed at addressing pollution and waste management in the region. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator on Chemicals and Pollution and will be involved in a range of communication and knowledge management tasks related to several key projects. These projects include the Intergovernmental Network on Chemicals and Waste, the Intergovernmental Network on Atmospheric Pollution, and initiatives focused on the progressive closure of dumpsites and the management of plastics and microplastics pollution. The intern will play a crucial role in enhancing communication strategies, managing knowledge-sharing activities, and supporting public awareness efforts related to environmental issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's duties will include supporting communication tasks for the networks on pollution, coordinating and managing events such as webinars, and disseminating information to network focal points. The intern will also be responsible for updating web pages, drafting informative notes, and preparing progress reports on the implementation of work plans. Additionally, the intern will assist in knowledge management activities, compile results from knowledge-sharing initiatives, and coordinate meetings of focal points and steering committees. This may involve preparing support materials, presentations, and meeting minutes. The intern will also develop public awareness materials and coordinate face-to-face events as necessary, while supporting other activities of the Chemicals and Pollution Programme as requested.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following academic requirements: be enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in communication, graphic design, public awareness, international relations, social sciences, or a related field; be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree program in the same fields; or have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in these areas within the past year. Additional skills that are beneficial include educational expertise focused on the United Nations, knowledge of critical environmental issues in the Latin American and Caribbean region, good writing skills in both Spanish and English, and competence in organizing and disseminating events. Familiarity with design and data visualization programs, social media experience in public awareness, and the ability to develop public awareness materials are also assets.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in or completion of a degree in communication, graphic design, public awareness, international relations, social sciences, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong academic foundation that supports their ability to engage with environmental issues and communication strategies effectively.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have relevant academic experience, either through their current studies or previous internships. While specific professional experience is not mandatory, familiarity with environmental issues, communication strategies, and event management will be advantageous. Interns should demonstrate a proactive approach to learning and contributing to the UNEP's mission.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Spanish is required for this internship. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered desirable, as it may enhance communication capabilities within the diverse linguistic context of the United Nations.
