Job Overview:
The Climate and Environment Team Leader position is a critical role within the Uganda Refugee Resilience Initiative (URRI) programme, which aims to enhance climate resilience among vulnerable populations, including refugees and host communities. This role involves ensuring the technical quality and due diligence of environmental activities in the Yumbe, Moyo, and Obongi districts. The Team Leader will oversee the implementation of various environmental initiatives, support community training, and ensure that all activities align with donor requirements and local government plans. The position requires a proactive approach to managing relationships with stakeholders and implementing partners, as well as a strong commitment to promoting environmentally sustainable practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Climate and Environment Team Leader include:
  • Administrative Role: Overseeing the day-to-day management of the URRI programme, ensuring alignment with donor requirements and local policies, supervising staff, managing relationships with partners, and supporting financial management and reporting processes.
  • Technical Responsibilities: Conducting environmental assessments, monitoring project materials, coordinating with district officials, leading forestry and land restoration activities, and implementing environmental risk management strategies.
  • Partnership and Capacity Support: Enhancing the capacity of partner organizations in resilience design and climate initiatives.
  • Staff Development: Supporting the technical development of Environment officers and Assistants, including performance appraisals.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Documenting project successes and challenges, participating in project reviews, and ensuring compliance with DRC's MEAL requirements.
  • Reporting: Providing data for donor reports and performing additional duties as assigned.
  • Adhering to DRC’s code of conduct and promoting ethical standards.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Management, Forestry, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in Environment or Climate interventions, with experience leading at least 3 projects in a similar role. A broad knowledge of resilience design, climate change, and biodiversity conservation is essential, along with experience working with donor-funded projects and international NGOs. Strong communication, analytical, and negotiation skills are also required, as well as a commitment to gender equality and accountability practices.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Management, or Forestry. Additional training in resilience design and environmental conservation is desirable and may enhance a candidate's application.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of full-time relevant professional experience in Environment or Climate interventions. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing projects and leading teams in similar roles, particularly in the context of donor-funded initiatives and international NGOs. Relevant work experience in Northern Uganda is also preferred, as it provides valuable insights into the local context and challenges.

Languages:
Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Strong communication skills are essential for effective stakeholder engagement and reporting. Additional language skills relevant to the local context may be considered an asset but are not mandatory.

The contract for this position is for a duration of 4 months, with a designated duty station in Bidibidi. The expected start date is September 202
