The UNOPS Africa Regional Office, based in Nairobi, Kenya, oversees the delivery of over 250 projects across 40 countries, focusing on fragile and conflict-affected settings. Established to advance national priorities through strategic initiatives in various sectors, the office is supported by more than 1,000 personnel across five multi-country offices in Africa. Job Overview:
The Hydrogeology Advisor position is a unique opportunity to apply specialized hydrogeological expertise to critical water and sanitation infrastructure projects across the Horn of Africa. The role involves independently managing significant technical aspects, providing authoritative guidance, and contributing to sustainable environmental resource management. The advisor will support the design, construction, and management of hydraulic and sanitation infrastructures, ensuring sustainable management of underground water resources. This position is critical for developing basin plans and implementing water management strategies, directly impacting community well-being and regional development within a leading UN organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Required Qualifications:
Required: A Master's degree or equivalent with 7 years of relevant experience in hydrogeology. Desired: A Ph.D./Doctorate/Post Doctorate with 7 years of relevant experience. Candidates should have a strong background in groundwater modeling, statistical methods, GIS, and environmental engineering.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field, with a preference for those holding a Ph.D. or higher qualifications. The educational background should include extensive knowledge of hydrogeology and applied geology, supported by relevant professional experience.
Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in groundwater modeling within the engineering sector is required. This includes experience with statistical methods, numerical methods, GIS, and contaminant modeling. Desired experience includes risk assessment of water systems and a background in teaching or conducting applied research in hydrogeology.
Languages:
Fluency in English is required. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not mandatory.

The position is a senior-level role with a contract duration of one year, initially renewable based on satisfactory performance and budget availability. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Technical Expertise: Provide specialist technical advice and design support in hydrogeology and applied geology. Guide the team in resolving geological, hydrogeological, and geomorphological challenges. Support sustainable environmental resource management, particularly groundwater resources. Contribute to decision-support systems for optimal allocation and conservation of natural resources.
- Monitoring and Reporting: Engage with the WASH team and stakeholders on data collection and modeling. Ensure accurate and timely reporting of implementation plan progress. Prepare and submit reports summarizing task progress, risks, and issues to the Senior Project Manager.
- Knowledge Sharing and Knowledge Building: Coach and train project personnel in modeling hydrogeological processes. Ensure high standards of knowledge management and quality assurance. Contribute to project implementation by highlighting challenges and providing feedback.
- Personnel Management: Assist the Senior Project Manager in delivering projects with hydrogeological components. Support the technical work of the team and ensure optimum performance. Foster a culture of respect and zero tolerance for discrimination and abuse.
