Job Overview:
The Data Platform Engineer role at CHAI is designed for a hands-on builder who will be responsible for designing, developing, and shipping internal platforms that enhance the organization's operations across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The position requires a candidate who is adept at creating first-class tools that leverage cutting-edge technology to benefit the entire health sector. Recent projects include the development of a data foundation, including a data warehouse and finance and operations dashboard, which are tailored to the needs of CHAI's teams. The role is crucial for enabling teams to work more effectively in their mission to save lives and reduce disease burden in the 35 countries where CHAI operates. The position reports to the Head of Finance Systems and AI Transformation, and the ideal candidate should possess strong organizational instincts and a commitment to solving real-world problems through technology.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Data Platform Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, and operating scalable platform services that will be utilized by approximately 2,000 people across 35 countries. Key responsibilities include:
  • Building out and productionizing current data products, including workflows, data warehouses, and reporting systems.
  • Creating AI-enabled systems that are reliable, maintainable, secure, cost-efficient, and user-friendly for internal teams.
  • Collaborating with IT, Operations, and Program teams to ensure that the tools developed align with actual workflows, integrate seamlessly with existing systems, and adhere to modern security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security standards.
  • Engaging in continuous improvement of the platforms to meet the evolving needs of the organization as it scales up operations in the coming years.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, along with at least 3 years of experience in building and shipping code. Proven backend and systems engineering skills are essential. The ideal candidate should have strong organizational instincts, enabling them to understand team needs, identify valuable projects, and collaborate effectively with non-technical stakeholders. A sense of ownership and the ability to navigate uncertainty towards successful outcomes are crucial. Additionally, a genuine commitment to CHAI’s mission and an understanding of the challenges faced by a global health organization operating in resource-constrained, cross-cultural contexts are required. Familiarity with technical tools used at CHAI, such as DBT, Superset, Javascript, React, Supabase, Python, Typescript, and PostgreSQL, is also necessary. Experience in applying agentic tooling to engineering workflows and building tools for enterprise workflows (HR, Finance, Legal, Operations, etc.) while managing compliance requirements is preferred.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required for this position. The educational background should ideally be in a field related to computer science, engineering, or a similar discipline that provides the necessary technical foundation for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in building and shipping code, with a strong emphasis on backend and systems engineering. Experience in developing scalable platforms and tools for enterprise workflows is highly desirable, particularly in contexts that require compliance with various regulations and standards.

Languages:
