Job Overview:
The Protection Officer - Legal Aid will work under the direct supervision of the Legal Aid Team Leader (TL) to ensure the effective implementation of DRC’s legal aid interventions. This role involves delivering timely, high-quality legal aid services, which include providing legal information, conducting awareness sessions, offering counseling, and assisting beneficiaries in accessing legal documentation in the Lahj Governorate. The officer will be responsible for legal aid interventions in designated operational areas and will maintain effective relationships with relevant stakeholders, including community members, local partners, and the Civil Registration Authority (CRA). The position requires a proactive approach to identifying legal protection needs and ensuring that beneficiaries receive the necessary support and information to navigate legal processes effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Protection Officer - Legal Aid include providing protection legal services in compliance with DRC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and international guidelines. The officer will conduct awareness sessions, provide legal counseling, and facilitate access to civil documentation. Responsibilities also include disseminating accurate information to beneficiaries, conducting individual legal counseling sessions, and providing legal documentation services through the CRA office in Aden. The officer will ensure clear communication with beneficiaries regarding their options and maintain confidentiality and accuracy in legal documentation. Field visits will be conducted to assess legal protection needs, identify individuals at risk, and refer them to necessary services. The officer will also be responsible for tracking and reporting activity data, maintaining legal databases, and ensuring that all legal documents are archived according to DRC protocols. Coordination with stakeholders and maintaining positive relationships within the team are also essential aspects of this role.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess at least 3 years of experience in the legal sector, specifically in providing legal services within the humanitarian context. Familiarity with DRC and its target populations, including internally displaced persons, returnees, and refugees, is advantageous. A strong understanding of local communities, customary rules, and Yemeni law is essential, along with knowledge of international protection and human rights legal standards. Candidates should demonstrate excellent organizational, planning, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively. Interpersonal skills, creativity, and flexibility are also important, along with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and respecting the rights of beneficiaries.
Educational Background:
The essential educational qualification for this position is a university degree in Law. An advanced university degree is considered a desirable qualification, enhancing the candidate's suitability for the role.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in the legal sector, particularly in providing legal services in humanitarian settings. Familiarity with the Danish Refugee Council's operations and its target populations is a distinct advantage, as is a strong understanding of local legal frameworks and international protection standards.
Languages:
Fluency in Arabic is mandatory for this position, while proficiency in English is desirable. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages to engage with beneficiaries and stakeholders.
Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is set to last until June 30, 2027, and it falls within the non-management (H2) band. The role reports to the Protection Team Leader - Legal Aid and is based in Aden/Lahj, Yemen. Salary and conditions will align with the Danish Refugee Council’s National Terms of Employment.
