Job Overview:
The Gender Data Analyst position is integral to the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Program (SIARP) 2.0, which aims to eliminate sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and harmful practices while linking these issues to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) across Africa. The analyst will work under the supervision of the Regional Technical Adviser, Population Data Policy, and will be responsible for coordinating the review and update of data collection tools related to VAWG, SGBV, and HP. This role involves engaging with various stakeholders, including national statistical offices and civil society organizations, to strengthen their capacity in data methodologies. The analyst will also contribute to the development of knowledge products and evidence-based communication strategies to enhance awareness and advocacy around GBV and SRHR issues.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Gender Data Analyst will undertake a variety of tasks, including: coordinating the review and update of standardized data collection tools on VAWG, SGBV, and HP; organizing capacity-building initiatives for regional and national institutions; drafting knowledge products and briefing papers to communicate evidence-based findings; reviewing gender data concerning vulnerable groups; supporting evidence-building efforts related to GBV and SRHR; facilitating the upkeep of accessible databases; and advocating for the use of gender data in policy-making. The analyst will also engage in technical consultations and workshops to validate data and inform regional priorities.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong analytical skills, experience in data collection and analysis, and a solid understanding of gender issues, particularly in relation to SGBV and SRHR. Proficiency in data management software and statistical analysis tools is essential. The role requires excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. A commitment to gender equality and human rights is crucial, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation.
Educational Background:
A relevant degree in social sciences, statistics, public health, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in gender studies, data analysis, or public health will be considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate a strong academic background that supports their ability to engage with complex data and gender issues.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in data analysis, research, or a related field, preferably within the context of gender issues and sexual and reproductive health. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs focused on gender equality and women's rights is highly desirable. Familiarity with the African context and regional frameworks related to SGBV and SRHR will be advantageous.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UN. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly French or Portuguese, is considered a strong asset, given the regional focus of the position and the diverse linguistic landscape of Africa.
Additional Notes:
This position is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the selected candidate will be responsible for their own accommodation and travel arrangements. The role is a full-time UN Volunteer position, offering a monthly living allowance of $2496.24, a one-time entry lump sum of $3500, and family allowances for dependents. The position includes medical insurance, life cover, and access to learning platforms, along with a one-time exit lump sum at the end of the assignment.
