UN Volunteer - Research Investment Support
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization that operates in approximately 170 countries and territories. Established to reduce poverty and address inequality, UNDP plays a crucial role in helping nations manage shocks and sustain progress. As the UN's lead development agency, it supports countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing national, regional, and global commitments related to climate action, governance, resilience, and economic development. UNDP has been active in Mozambique since 1976, collaborating with the government to promote national development priorities. The organization's focus in Mozambique includes accelerating structural transformation, fostering inclusive growth, and addressing systemic risks to ensure that no one is left behind. UNDP emphasizes economic diversification, sustainable livelihoods, resilience to climate and economic shocks, inclusive governance, and social cohesion, while also prioritizing poverty reduction, gender equality, and opportunities for marginalized groups.
Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer will play a vital role in supporting UNDP Mozambique's economic analysis work by exploring investment activities across various sectors and regions within the country. This position involves systematically identifying, documenting, and organizing investment-related information to aid ongoing research and planning efforts. The volunteer will be responsible for sourcing investment data from multiple stakeholders and validating its accuracy through direct engagement. This role is essential for enhancing the understanding of investment landscapes in Mozambique and contributing to the overall objectives of the UNDP's country programme.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include sourcing and aggregating investment data across different sectors and geographic regions. This involves finding investment information from various sources such as government reports, company websites, news articles, and databases, and organizing the data by sector (e.g., agriculture, energy, manufacturing, tourism) and province. The volunteer will also review the collected data for accuracy and completeness, checking for errors, missing details, or conflicting figures, and flagging any discrepancies that require follow-up. Additionally, the volunteer will validate the data by directly contacting stakeholders, including investment entities and government agencies, via email, phone, or meetings to confirm the correctness of the information and gather any missing details. Maintaining organized Excel datasets is another critical responsibility, where the volunteer will input verified information into well-structured spreadsheets with clear columns (such as Company Name, Sector, Investment Amount, Year, Province, Source, Status, etc.) and ensure consistency in formatting and data entry.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. Proficiency in data management and experience with Excel are essential. The ideal candidate should also have excellent communication skills to effectively engage with stakeholders and validate data. A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively within a team are highly valued. Familiarity with investment analysis and economic research methodologies would be advantageous.
Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in economics, finance, business administration, or a related field is required. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in investment analysis or economic development will be given preference. Relevant coursework or certifications in data analysis or research methodologies would also be beneficial.
Experience:
The position requires candidates to have some level of experience in data collection, analysis, or research, preferably within the context of economic development or investment analysis. Previous volunteer or internship experience in a similar role would be advantageous, as would familiarity with the economic landscape of Mozambique or similar contexts.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within UNDP. Proficiency in Portuguese is highly desirable, given the local context of Mozambique. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the stakeholders involved in the investment landscape.
Additional Notes:
This is a remote position, allowing for flexibility in work hours. The role is part of a volunteer program, and while it may not offer financial compensation, it provides valuable experience and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful development work. The UNDP emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusion in its workforce and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
