Job Overview:
The Great Sea Reef Project Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the Great Sea Reef (GSR) Programme, which aims to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pressures in Fiji and the wider Pacific region. The officer will provide technical, administrative, and operational support to ensure the effective planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of project activities. This position requires collaboration with government agencies, project partners, and local communities, as well as conducting research and data analysis to inform decision-making. The officer will also assist in aligning the GSR Programme's work with the annual plans of WWF Volunteers, ensuring that community-led conservation efforts are prioritized and supported. The role is vital for driving WWF's core objectives and vision in partnership with local communities, ultimately contributing to the restoration and conservation of critical marine ecosystems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Project Officer's duties include providing direct assistance to the GSR Programme Manager and project team in planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of activities in accordance with WWF standards and donor agreements. Responsibilities encompass preparing high-quality technical and donor reports, collecting and analyzing data, and interpreting findings to track project outcomes. The officer will support project planning processes, stakeholder consultations, and field logistics, ensuring smooth delivery of programme activities. Additionally, the officer will engage with various stakeholders, including government agencies, communities, NGOs, and private sector partners, to strengthen partnerships and facilitate communication. Monitoring project progress against approved work plans and budgets, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with WWF internal procedures are also key responsibilities. The officer will coordinate WWF Volunteers and support stakeholder consultations, demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in marine science or a related field, along with at least three years of work experience in a marine or conservation-related field. Relevant experience in project coordination, administration, or programme management is essential, as is the ability to manage multiple stakeholders and competing priorities. Knowledge of project management principles and methodologies is desirable, and candidates should demonstrate fieldwork experience in conservation projects. Proficiency in GIS and Google Maps, as well as the ability to write field reports, are also required. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team are crucial, along with a flexible approach and willingness to work outside normal hours.
Educational Background:
A degree in marine science or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the necessary foundation for understanding marine ecosystems, conservation strategies, and the challenges faced in the field. Candidates with additional certifications or training in project management or community engagement will be viewed favorably, as these skills are essential for the successful execution of the GSR Programme's objectives.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant work experience in a marine or conservation-related field. This experience should include project coordination, administration, or programme management, with a proven track record of working with diverse stakeholders and managing competing priorities. Candidates should have demonstrated fieldwork experience in conservation projects, showcasing their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings and contribute to successful project outcomes.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all documentation and communication will be conducted in English. Knowledge of Fijian or other local languages would be considered an asset, as it would enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders, fostering stronger relationships and collaboration in conservation efforts.
