The organization aims to enhance the language abilities of UN staff through the provision of language and communication skills courses in multiple languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. The LCTU operates at UN Headquarters in New York and extends its services to the Global Secretariat, ensuring that staff members are equipped with the necessary language skills to perform effectively in a multicultural environment. Established to meet the growing demand for language learning, the LCTU seeks to hire additional part-time language teachers as individual contractors, depending on the demand and available budget.

Job Overview:
The part-time language teachers are expected to prepare and facilitate lessons for assigned courses, correct assignments and homework promptly, and monitor student progress while suggesting effective learning strategies on a weekly basis. They will provide both group and individual feedback, administer assessments, and grade evaluation tasks, tests, and exams as scheduled. At the conclusion of each course, part-time teachers must provide final evaluations for students and report on attendance. The role requires participation in the development of language or communication skills projects, with periodic reporting on progress and integration of feedback from supervisors to ensure quality deliverables. The contract duration is linked to the language learning calendar and the length of courses and pedagogical activities assigned, allowing for flexibility in scheduling and course delivery methods, including in-person, online, hybrid, or workshop formats.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of part-time language teachers of English include preparing and teaching English language and communication skills courses at all levels, assessing student performance, and providing constructive feedback. Teachers are responsible for designing assessments and communicative tasks, updating pedagogical materials as necessary, and constructing and grading language proficiency exams according to specific guidelines. They must regularly assess and communicate learner progress through graded assignments and exams, develop new courses and learning materials using innovative instructional technology, and utilize Learning Management Systems (such as Moodle) and e-learning tools for course preparation and delivery. Additionally, teachers are tasked with maintaining attendance and grading records within the Learning Management System, ensuring that all administrative aspects of course delivery are managed effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, education/pedagogy, or a related field. Degrees with a focus on the theory and practice of teaching a second or foreign language to adult learners are highly desirable. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Post-degree training in second or foreign language teaching is also highly desirable, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in relevant fields such as language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, or education/pedagogy. Candidates with a first-level university degree may be considered if they have additional qualifying experience. Special emphasis on teaching methodologies for adult learners is preferred, and post-degree training in language teaching is an added advantage.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience teaching English as a foreign or second language to adults in a multicultural setting, which can include corporate, academic, or other professional environments. At least three of those years must involve recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, and/or language teacher training. Experience with e-learning tools, learning management systems, and online collaboration tools is desirable, as is experience in an international, multicultural context.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates must demonstrate expert-level competence in English, both oral and written, in accordance with the UN Language Framework. Advanced knowledge of English is required, and knowledge of other UN official languages is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual environment.
