Job Overview:
The position of Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) Translator/Interpreter is crucial for ensuring effective communication within the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and with external stakeholders. The role encompasses providing high-quality translation and interpretation services to both national and international staff, as well as government representatives and other relevant parties. The Translator/Interpreter will be responsible for translating written documents and providing oral interpretation during various activities, including operational meetings, training sessions, and field deployments. This position not only requires linguistic proficiency but also the ability to navigate complex humanitarian contexts, ensuring that communication is clear, accurate, and culturally sensitive. Additionally, the role includes driving responsibilities, which involve transporting Technical Advisors and Field Managers as needed, thereby contributing to the operational efficiency of the HMA/HDP teams. The successful candidate will be expected to engage actively in mobile operations, demonstrating flexibility and readiness to adapt to field conditions.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's degree in Translation, Interpretation, or a related field. This educational foundation is essential for ensuring that the candidate possesses the necessary skills and knowledge to perform high-quality translations and interpretations in a humanitarian context. The degree should ideally provide a comprehensive understanding of linguistic nuances, cultural sensitivities, and the ethical considerations involved in translation and interpretation work.
Experience:
Candidates are expected to have at least one year of working experience in a similar position or within an international organization. This experience should ideally include roles that required translation and interpretation skills, particularly in humanitarian settings. Familiarity with the operations of international NGOs and the specific challenges faced in humanitarian mine action will be advantageous.
Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position include advanced proficiency in English and Ukrainian, with a proficiency level of C1–C
Additional Notes:
The contract for this position includes a 3-month probation period, with the possibility of extension to one year depending on performance and the availability of funding. The duty station for this role is Mykolaiv, which is classified as a non-family duty station. The start date for the position is as soon as possible. The salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for national employees, starting from EUR 2025 gross per month, which may vary based on experience and qualifications. Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Translator/Interpreter include:
- Providing oral interpretation between national and international staff, government representatives, and other stakeholders as required.
- Ensuring accurate, professional, and confidential interpretation during individual and group meetings, training sessions, and operational briefings.
- Preparing written translations of documents from Ukrainian and/or Russian into English, and vice versa.
- Translating training materials and providing interpretation during HMA/HDP training courses and related activities.
- Being prepared to join HMA/HDP mobile teams and deploy to operational field locations when required.
- Performing driving duties, including transporting Technical Advisors and Field Managers.
- Ensuring effective communication is established and maintained with the OPS Room and the Area South Safety Sector.
- Performing daily vehicle checks in accordance with the Driver's Manual and reporting any issues to the DRC HDP TFM and the DRC South Fleet Team.
- Responding promptly to urgent interpretation requests in coordination with the line manager. 1
- Acting in the best interests of beneficiaries, ensuring respectful, culturally sensitive, and professional communication. 1
- Ensuring compliance with the DRC Code of Conduct and safeguarding principles. 1
- Adhering to DRC Fleet, Safety, and HMA Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). 1
- Carrying out any other duties assigned by the line manager in support of DRC's operational objectives.
Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, candidates must possess the following qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Translation, Interpretation, or a related field.
- Advanced proficiency (C1–C2) in English and Ukrainian; proficiency in Russian is considered an asset.
- Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- A valid Category B driver's license with at least three years of driving experience and a solid understanding of Ukrainian traffic regulations.
- High professional ethics and a strong understanding of confidentiality principles. Candidates with previous experience as a translator/interpreter with an international NGO working in Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) will be viewed favorably.
